Description

Indications

Elimate Cream is prescribed for the treatment of scabies and infestations caused by crab lice (Pediculosis). Scabies can affect all members of a household, so if one person is diagnosed, it’s important that the entire family undergoes treatment simultaneously.
Take medication as directed by a registered physician.

Pharmacology

Elimate Cream contains Permethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid, which works as a topical scabicide to eliminate Sarcoptes Scabiei (the mites that cause scabies). Permethrin targets the nerve cell membrane of parasites, disrupting the sodium channel flow, which affects membrane polarization. This disruption leads to delayed repolarization and ultimately causes paralysis and death of the parasites.

Pharmacokinetics

The only recommended application method for permethrin is topical. Limited human studies are available on systemic absorption or metabolism following its application to the skin. Minor metabolism happens at the skin level. Less than 0.5% of applied permethrin is absorbed in the first 48 hours. Once absorbed, permethrin is quickly metabolized, likely in the liver, through ester hydrolysis, and the resulting products are mostly eliminated via urine.

Dosage

Recommended treatment duration:

  • Adults and children over 12 years: one full tube
  • Children aged 6-12 years: up to half a tube
  • Children aged 1-5 years: up to a quarter of a tube
  • Children aged 2 months to 1 year: up to one-eighth of a tube
  • Children under 2 months: dosage not established

Use medication only under the guidance of a registered physician.

Administration

Before applying Permethrin Cream, ensure the skin is clean, cool, and dry. Avoid hot showers or baths before application.

For adults and children over 2 years: Apply the cream to the entire body from the neck down, massaging it gently until fully absorbed. Ensure thorough coverage, including areas like between fingers and toes, under the nails, and on the soles of the feet.

For babies under 2 years: In addition to the body, apply to the face, neck, ears, and scalp, while avoiding the areas around the eyes and mouth.

Leave the cream on for at least 8 hours before washing off. Reapply to any areas that may be washed off during the treatment period (e.g., after washing hands). If needed, repeat the treatment after 7 days following medical advice.
Use medication only under the guidance of a registered physician.

Interaction

Avoid treating eczema-like reactions with corticosteroids before using Elimate, as this may worsen the scabies infestation by weakening the body’s immune response to the mites.

Contraindications

Elimate Cream is contraindicated in individuals with known allergies to pyrethroids, permethrin, or any of its components. Healthcare workers who regularly apply permethrin should wear gloves to prevent potential skin irritation.

Side Effects

In some patients with scabies, mild skin irritation—such as burning, stinging, or tingling—may occur shortly after application. Other temporary symptoms may include redness, swelling, eczema, rash, or itching.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Elimate Cream should only be used during pregnancy following medical advice, as no specific studies have been conducted on its use in pregnant women. It is unknown if permethrin passes into breast milk, so it is not recommended for use in nursing mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

Scabies infestation can cause itching, swelling, and redness. Using Elimate Cream may temporarily worsen these symptoms. Users should take care to avoid contact with the eyes, and if the cream accidentally gets in the eyes, rinse immediately with water.

Therapeutic Class

Antiparasitic agents.

Storage Conditions

Store in a cool, dry location away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
