Indications
Edopain ER is indicated for:
- Managing acute and chronic symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
- Alleviating acute pain.
- Treating acute gout.
Always consult a registered healthcare professional before use.
Description
Edopain ER is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) known for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, similar to other NSAIDs.
Pharmacology
Like other NSAIDs, the anti-inflammatory effects of etodolac stem from the inhibition of the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme, which reduces the production of peripheral prostaglandins that mediate inflammation. Etodolac preferentially binds to the COX enzyme’s active site, effectively blocking arachidonic acid. It is notably 5-50 times more selective for COX-2 than for COX-1. Its antipyretic effect is mediated centrally through the hypothalamus, promoting peripheral dilation and increased cutaneous blood flow, leading to heat loss.
Dosage & Administration
For adults (18 years and older):
- Etodolac 300 mg capsules: 600 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses.
- Etodolac 600 mg ER tablets: Once daily.
Safety and effectiveness in patients under 18 have not been established. Always consult a registered healthcare professional before use.
Interaction
NSAIDs, including Edopain ER, may reduce the antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibitors. Care should be taken when using Edopain ER with aspirin, as it may reduce protein binding without altering free clearance. Due to the potential for increased adverse effects, concomitant use of Edopain ER and aspirin is not typically recommended.
Contraindications
Etodolac is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to the drug and those who have experienced asthma, urticaria, or other allergic reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include gastrointestinal issues such as abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting. Other possible effects include abnormal renal function, dizziness, edema, elevated liver enzymes, headaches, and skin reactions.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Currently, there are no adequate studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy is advised only if the potential benefits outweigh risks. The excretion of Etodolac in human milk is not established, so a decision should be made regarding nursing based on its importance to the mother.
Precautions & Warnings
Caution is advised in patients with severe liver issues, pre-existing asthma, fluid retention, hypertension, or heart failure. Discontinue use if liver disease symptoms appear.
Overdose Effects
Symptoms of NSAID overdose may include lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and epigastric pain, which are usually reversible with supportive care.
Therapeutic Class
Edopain ER falls under the categories of drugs for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C, away from light, and out of reach of children.
