Pharmacology
Econazole Nitrate acts by disrupting fungal oxidative enzymes, leading to a harmful buildup of H2O2 within fungal cells. Additionally, it inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, a crucial component of the fungal cell membrane.
Dosage & Administration
- Econazole Vaginal Tablet: Insert one tablet deeply into the vagina at bedtime for three consecutive nights. Continue treatment even during menstruation. Although a three-night regimen is typically effective, longer durations may be beneficial for women with recurring vaginal infections.
- Econazole 30 g Cream: Fill the provided applicator with econazole cream and insert it deeply into the vagina once or twice daily at bedtime.
- Econazole 10 g Cream: Apply a thin layer to the affected area once or twice daily until symptoms improve.
For conditions such as tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, and tinea versicolor, apply sufficient econazole cream to cover the affected areas once daily. For cutaneous candidiasis, apply twice daily (morning and evening). Many patients experience rapid symptom relief, with noticeable clinical improvement occurring soon after treatment begins. However, candidal infections and tinea cruris/corporis should be treated for two weeks, while tinea pedis requires one month of therapy to minimize recurrence. If there is no clinical improvement after the designated treatment period, re-evaluate the diagnosis. Typically, patients with tinea versicolor show clinical and mycological improvement after two weeks of treatment.
Please use this medication as directed by a registered healthcare professional.
Interaction
Warfarin: Concurrent use of econazole with warfarin can enhance its anticoagulant effects. Most reported cases involve application under occlusion, genital use, or application to large body areas, which may increase systemic absorption of econazole nitrate. Regular monitoring of International Normalized Ratio (INR) and/or prothrombin time is advisable, especially for patients applying econazole to large areas, the genital region, or under occlusive dressings.
Carcinogenicity Studies: Long-term animal studies to assess the carcinogenic potential of econazole have not been conducted.
Contraindications
Econazole is contraindicated for individuals with a known hypersensitivity to any of its components.
Side Effects
In clinical trials, around 3% of patients using Econate-G 1% cream reported side effects potentially related to the medication, primarily consisting of burning, itching, stinging, and erythema. One instance of a pruritic rash has also been documented.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Econazole’s intravaginal use in humans has not been linked to prolonged gestation or adverse reproductive outcomes. It is classified as Pregnancy Category C, suggesting that it should be used during the first trimester only when deemed essential by a physician. Its use during the second and third trimesters should occur only if clearly warranted.
It remains unclear whether econazole nitrate is excreted in human milk; thus, caution is advised when administering it to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Econate-G is intended for external use only and should not be applied to the eyes. Discontinue use if any signs of sensitivity or irritation occur.
Overdose Effects
No cases of Econate-G overdose in humans have been reported to date.

Econate-G belongs to the class of medications used for treating vaginal and vulval conditions, specifically as a topical antifungal agent.
