Indications
Dobesil Capsules are recommended for the management of hemorrhoidal syndrome, microcirculatory issues of arterovenous origin, and symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency in the lower extremities, including pain, cramps, paresthesia, edema, stasis, and dermatosis. It is also beneficial in treating diabetic retinopathy and as adjunctive therapy in superficial thrombophlebitis.
Always follow the advice of a registered healthcare professional when using this medication.
Description
Dobesil is a vasoactive treatment designed to enhance endothelial integrity, regulate capillary permeability, and reduce blood viscosity. It works by reducing capillary hyperpermeability, inhibiting platelet aggregation (the clumping of platelets), and lowering serum viscosity, which in turn improves circulation and facilitates better tissue and organ oxygenation.
Pharmacology
Calcium Dobesilate, the active ingredient in Dobesil, acts as a vasoactive agent that influences endothelial function, reduces capillary permeability, and enhances blood flow. By reducing capillary leakage, platelet aggregation, and serum viscosity, Dobesil helps optimize blood circulation to tissues and organs, supporting overall vascular health.
Dosage & Administration
It is recommended to take 1 to 2 capsules of Dobesil (500 mg) daily with main meals. The duration of treatment may vary from a few weeks to several months, depending on the specific condition and its progression. The dosage should be tailored based on the severity of the condition and as advised by your healthcare provider.
Always follow the advice of a registered healthcare professional when using this medication.
Contraindications
Dobesil is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to Calcium Dobesilate. Caution is advised in patients with severe renal insufficiency or those requiring dialysis. In rare cases (0.32/million patients), Dobesil may lead to agranulocytosis, which is linked to hypersensitivity reactions. Symptoms may include fever, sore throat, oral infections, or anogenital inflammation, often indicative of infection. If any of these symptoms occur, promptly consult your doctor.
Side Effects
Side effects are rare but may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea or diarrhea, skin reactions, fever, and joint pain. In extremely rare cases, agranulocytosis may develop. These side effects typically resolve upon discontinuation of the medication. In the case of gastrointestinal issues, dosage adjustments or temporary cessation of treatment may be necessary. For skin reactions, fever, joint pain, or any changes in blood cell counts, stop the treatment and consult your healthcare provider as these could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There is limited data on the use of Dobesil during pregnancy or in animal studies. Since it is unknown if Calcium Dobesilate crosses the placental barrier in humans, it should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the risk to the fetus. Dobesil is also present in breast milk in minimal amounts (0.04g/ml after 3×500mg dosage). As a precaution, breastfeeding or treatment should be discontinued.
Precautions & Warnings
Dosage should be reduced in patients with severe renal insufficiency. In patients with agranulocytosis, Dobesil may decrease white blood cell count, affecting the body’s ability to combat infections. Seek immediate medical attention if flu-like symptoms such as sore throat, fever, or cough occur.
Overdose Effects
Symptoms of overdose have not been specifically identified. In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention.
