Pharmacology
Dicycloverine hydrochloride is an effective antispasmodic and anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) agent. Its chemical composition is [Bicyclohexyl-]1-carboxylic acid, 2-(diethylammo) ethyl ester, hydrochloride. Dicycloverine alleviates smooth muscle spasms within the gastrointestinal system. The injectable form of Dicycloverine HCl is a sterile, pyrogen-free aqueous solution intended for intramuscular use only (not suitable for intravenous administration). This medication targets specific cholinergic (muscarinic) receptors found on the involuntary muscles of the gut. By binding to these receptors, dicycloverine inhibits certain bodily chemicals from interacting, resulting in muscle relaxation and relief from colicky pain caused by muscle contractions and spasms.
Dosage & Administration
For Oral Dosage Forms:
- Adults: 10 to 20 mg, three times daily.
- Children over 6 months: 5 to 10 mg, three times daily.
For Injectable Dosage Form:
- Adults: Administer via intramuscular injection (not for intravenous use). The recommended daily intramuscular dosage is 80 mg, divided into four equal doses.
Oral dicycloverine hydrochloride should be initiated promptly, and the intramuscular form should not be used for longer than 1 to 2 days.
Children: Dosage must be determined by a physician. Please use this medication only under the guidance of a registered healthcare professional.
Side Effects
Possible side effects may include insomnia, mydriasis, cycloplegia, increased ocular pressure, urinary hesitancy, palpitations, and dyspnea.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Dicycloverine is classified as Pregnancy Category B, indicating no teratogenic or embryocidal effects were observed in animal studies. It should only be used during pregnancy when clearly necessary. There is limited information regarding its presence in breast milk; caution is advised for breastfeeding mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Use dicycloverine with care in patients with conditions such as autonomic neuropathy, liver or kidney disease, ulcerative colitis, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, hiatal hernia, or known/suspected prostate enlargement.
Overdose Effects
Toxic reactions with dicycloverine are rare. Symptoms of overdose may include headaches, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, dilated pupils, hot and dry skin, dizziness, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, and CNS stimulation.
