Pharmacological Information
Dicycloverine hydrochloride is classified as an antispasmodic and anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) medication. Its chemical structure is [Bicyclohexyl-]1-carboxylic acid, 2-(diethylammo) ethyl ester, hydrochloride. Dicycloverine effectively alleviates smooth muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal tract. The injectable form of Dicycloverine HCl is a sterile, pyrogen-free aqueous solution intended for intramuscular use only (not for intravenous administration).
The drug acts on specific cholinergic (muscarinic) receptors found in the involuntary muscles lining the gut. By binding to these receptors, Dicycloverine inhibits certain bodily chemicals from interacting with them, leading to relaxation of the gut muscles and relief from colic pain caused by muscle contractions and spasms.
Dosage and Administration
For oral dosage forms:
- Adults: 10 to 20 mg taken three times daily.
- Children over 6 months: 5 to 10 mg taken three times daily.
For injectable dosage form:
- Adults: Administered via intramuscular injection only (not for intravenous use). The recommended dosage is 80 mg daily, divided into four equal doses.
It is advisable to initiate oral Dicycloverine Hydrochloride treatment as soon as possible, and the intramuscular form should not be administered for longer than 1 to 2 days.
