Indications
This supplement is recommended for managing osteoarthritis affecting various joints including the knee, hip, spine, hand, and other areas. It also offers benefits in rheumatoid arthritis, sports injuries, migraines, skin conditions like psoriasis, vascular issues such as atherosclerosis, kidney stones, and inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis and leaky gut syndrome.
Pharmacology
Glucosamine, a natural amino-sugar, is vital for the body’s production of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) like Hyaluronic Acid, Keratan Sulfate, and Chondroitin Sulfate, crucial components of joint cartilage. Introducing Glucosamine Sulfate supplementation helps boost Glucosamine levels in the body, aiding in cartilage repair. Additionally, it stimulates chondrocytes, which support GAGs and proteoglycan production.
Chondroitin Sulfate, another essential component, works similarly to Glucosamine Sulfate by providing substrates for proteoglycan synthesis and safeguarding existing cartilage from degradation.
Combination Benefits
Combining Glucosamine with Chondroitin Sulfate yields synergistic effects. Research supports their efficacy in treating severe osteoarthritis symptoms and modifying disease progression. This combination also helps prevent osteoarthritis and offers relief comparable to NSAIDs but with better tolerability and clinical compliance. Moreover, it aids in soft tissue injury repair.
Dosage & Administration
The recommended dosage varies based on body weight and can be adjusted according to individual response. Typical dosages include:
- Under 54 kg: 1000 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 800 mg Chondroitin Sulfate per day
- 54 kg to 91 kg: 1500 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 1200 mg Chondroitin Sulfate per day
- Over 91 kg: 2000 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 1600 mg Chondroitin Sulfate per day.
Interaction
There have been no significant reports of drug interactions with Glucosamine and Chondroitin, except for potential enhancement of blood thinning effects with anticoagulants like Warfarin and Heparin.
Contraindications
While there are no known contraindications, individuals with proven hypersensitivity to shellfish or sulfur should avoid Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements.
Side Effects
Safety studies have shown no demonstrable side effects. Rare occurrences, such as mild and reversible intestinal flatulence, are minimal and akin to placebo effects.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnant or potentially pregnant women should avoid supplementation due to insufficient studies on fetal effects. There’s limited data on use during lactation, so caution and medical advice are recommended.
