Indications
Consucon is an oral antidiabetic medication that belongs to the sulphonylurea class. It is primarily prescribed for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and weight management alone are insufficient to control blood sugar levels.
Always consult a registered healthcare professional before using this medication.
Pharmacology
Gliclazide, the active ingredient in Consucon, is a second-generation sulfonylurea known for its hypoglycemic properties. It enhances insulin secretion from the pancreatic β-cells by facilitating calcium transport across their membranes and reduces glucose production in the liver.
Dosage & Administration
- Film-coated tablets: The typical starting dose is 40 to 80 mg daily, which can be increased up to 320 mg daily as needed. It is recommended to take the medication before meals.
- Modified release preparation: Follow your doctor’s instructions precisely. The recommended daily dosage is one to four tablets (maximum 120 mg) taken once daily at breakfast. Always consume a meal after taking the tablet(s).
If you’re combining Gliclazide with other antidiabetic medications, your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dosages for each. In case of missed doses, take the next dose at the regular time; do not double up.
Always consult a registered healthcare professional before using this medication.
Interactions
Inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking, as several can affect the efficacy of Consucon. Certain drugs, such as other antidiabetics, antibiotics, and some medications for high blood pressure, may enhance its blood sugar-lowering effects. Conversely, some medications may reduce its effectiveness. Alcohol consumption should be limited, as it can unpredictably affect blood sugar control.
Contraindications
Consucon should not be taken by individuals who are allergic to gliclazide or related sulfonylureas, those with insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1), severe kidney or liver disease, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
