Pharmacology
Compiron contains an Iron Polymaltose Complex, a unique polysaccharide-iron preparation designed for treating iron deficiency anemia. Iron, a vital component of hemoglobin, is crucial for oxygen transport and energy production in tissues. This complex form of iron is non-ionic and stable, allowing for controlled absorption at the mucosal cell surface. It does not release harmful free radicals, unlike traditional iron salts, thereby reducing toxicity. Moreover, it does not interfere with food or other medications, ensuring optimal bioavailability of iron. As a result, iron is efficiently utilized in hemoglobin and myoglobin synthesis, promoting faster recovery from deficiency.
Dosage & Administration
The dosage depends on the severity of iron deficiency, and should be taken according to your physician’s instructions:
- Adults: 10 ml once or twice daily
- Children (6-12 years): 10 ml daily
- Children (2-6 years): 5 ml daily
- Premature Infants & Infants: 3.33 mg of elemental iron per kg of body weight.
Consult with a registered healthcare provider for personalized dosing advice.
Interactions
Compiron has minimal interaction potential due to its complex iron binding. Ionic interactions with food components (like phytates, oxalates, and tannins) or medications (such as tetracyclines and antacids) are unlikely, ensuring consistent bioavailability.
Contraindications
- Iron Overload Conditions: Not recommended for individuals with a history of conditions like hemachromatosis, thalassemia, or hemochromatosis.
- Allergic Reactions: Avoid use if you are hypersensitive to iron or any other ingredient in this preparation.
Side Effects Compiron is generally well tolerated. However, some individuals may experience mild gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea.

- Pregnancy: Use during the first trimester should be based on a careful risk-benefit analysis, and only under medical supervision. In later stages of pregnancy, iron supplementation may be recommended by your healthcare provider.
- Lactation: Iron passes into breast milk in low concentrations, but this is not typically clinically significant.
