Indications
Citicol is used for:
- Cerebrovascular Disease: Facilitates recovery from ischemia due to stroke, enhancing consciousness and motor function. Initiating treatment within 24 hours post-stroke increases the likelihood of complete recovery within three months.
- Cerebral Insufficiency: Alleviates symptoms like dizziness, memory loss, poor concentration, and disorientation resulting from head trauma or brain injury.
- Cognitive Dysfunction: Effective in treating cognitive decline associated with degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
- Parkinson’s Disease: Acts as a co-therapy to support management of Parkinson’s disease.
Pharmacology
Citicoline, a natural substance, is crucial for synthesizing cell membrane phospholipids. When taken orally, it is metabolized into choline and cytidine, which cross the blood-brain barrier and recombine into Citicoline in the CNS. It promotes the repair of neuronal membranes, boosts neurotransmitter levels (like acetylcholine and dopamine), and offers neuroprotection during hypoxic and ischemic conditions. Citicoline also improves learning and memory, and inhibits Phospholipase A2 to prevent cell death.
