Indications
Cartilex is a dietary supplement recommended for the management of osteoarthritis, particularly affecting the knee, hip, spine, hands, and other areas. It is also beneficial for addressing conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, sports injuries, migraines, various skin issues (including psoriasis), vascular complications (such as atherosclerosis), kidney stones, and inflammatory bowel diseases (like ulcerative colitis and leaky gut syndrome).
Note: Always use Cartilex under the guidance of a registered healthcare provider.
Pharmacology
Glucosamine, a naturally occurring amino-sugar produced by the body and found in certain foods, plays a crucial role in the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) like Hyaluronic Acid, Keratan Sulfate, and Chondroitin Sulfate. These GAGs bind with proteins to form proteoglycans, which are essential for maintaining healthy articular cartilage. When the cartilage in a joint deteriorates, osteoarthritis can develop. Glucosamine also aids in the formation of ligaments, tendons, nails, and other connective tissues. Supplementing with glucosamine sulfate increases glucosamine levels in the body, facilitating cartilage repair and production. Additionally, glucosamine stimulates chondrocytes in cartilage to produce GAGs and proteoglycans.
Chondroitin Sulfate, a glycosaminoglycan found in connective tissues, especially in articular cartilage, also acts as a substrate for proteoglycans. It plays a protective role by preventing the breakdown of cartilage and helping to preserve healthy cartilage from early degeneration. This is accomplished by inhibiting the MMP (Matrix Metalloproteinase) enzyme, which is responsible for degrading proteoglycans.
The combination of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate produces a synergistic effect, making it highly effective in treating severe cases of osteoarthritis. It not only alleviates symptoms but also helps modify the disease’s progression. This combination is equally as effective as NSAIDs for osteoarthritic pain, with significantly improved tolerability and clinical compliance. It also supports the repair of musculoskeletal soft tissue injuries such as tendon or ligament strains.
Dosage & Administration
- 250/200 mg tablet: Take 1 to 2 tablets, three times daily. The dosage may be adjusted based on individual response and body weight. After 60 days, the dosage can be tapered according to the patient’s needs for cost efficiency.
- For individuals under 54 kg: 1000 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 800 mg Chondroitin Sulfate per day
- For individuals between 54 kg to 91 kg: 1500 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 1200 mg Chondroitin Sulfate per day
- For individuals over 91 kg: 2000 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 1600 mg Chondroitin Sulfate per day
- 750/600 mg tablet: Take 1 tablet twice daily or as directed by your physician.
Note: Always follow the advice of a registered healthcare provider.
Drug Interactions
No significant drug interactions have been reported between glucosamine, chondroitin, and commonly prescribed medications, including antibiotics, antidepressants, antihypertensives, and others. However, chondroitin may enhance the blood-thinning effects of anticoagulants such as warfarin and heparin.
Contraindications
There are no known contraindications for glucosamine and chondroitin, except in cases of proven hypersensitivity (such as an allergy to shellfish or sulfur).
Side Effects
Studies show that glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate are well-tolerated with no significant side effects. Rarely, mild and reversible intestinal flatulence may occur, which is often comparable to a placebo.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate have not been sufficiently studied to determine their effects during pregnancy or lactation. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should consult a healthcare professional before use.
Precautions & Warnings
- Diabetes Mellitus: Diabetic patients should regularly monitor their blood glucose levels while using glucosamine supplements.
- Renal or Hepatic Insufficiency: No special studies have been conducted in patients with kidney or liver impairments, but glucosamine and chondroitin do not show any limitations for these patients. However, it is recommended that these individuals use the supplements under medical supervision.
- Children: Glucosamine and chondroitin should not be given to children.
