Indications
This treatment kit is designed for the management and prevention of osteoporosis in both women (particularly post-menopausal) and men. It effectively enhances bone mineral density (BMD) and minimizes the risk of vertebral fractures.
Product Description
This kit features Ibandronic Acid, a bisphosphonate medication that modifies the bone formation and resorption cycle. By slowing bone loss and increasing bone mass, Ibandronic Acid helps in preventing fractures. It specifically targets hydroxyapatite crystals in the bone, acting as a hydroxyapatite agent. At the cellular level, it inhibits osteoclast activity, reducing bone resorption.
Understanding Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a condition where the body breaks down bone faster than it can be rebuilt, leading to thinner, more fragile bones. This is common in post-menopausal women but can affect men as well. Often asymptomatic, osteoporosis increases the risk of fractures, particularly in the spine, hips, and wrists.
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended Dose: One 150 mg Ibandronic Acid tablet should be taken once a month on the same date each month.
- Supplementary Calcium: For optimal results, take two Calcium Orotate tablets daily, divided into two doses.
How to Take Ibandronic Acid:
- Timing: Take the tablet at least 60 minutes before any food, drink (other than water), or other medications (including calcium, antacids, or vitamins).
- Method: Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass (250 ml) of plain water while standing or sitting upright. Avoid lying down for 60 minutes after taking the tablet.
Missed Dose Instructions:
- If the monthly dose is missed and the next scheduled dose is more than 7 days away, take the tablet as soon as remembered and return to the original schedule.
- If the missed dose is less than 7 days away from the next dose, wait until the next month’s scheduled day to take the tablet. Resume the original monthly schedule thereafter.
Do not: Take more than one 150 mg tablet in a week.
Calcium Orotate Usage: Start taking Calcium Orotate tablets the day after your Ibandronic Acid dose.
Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions.
Drug Interactions
- Ibandronic Acid: Avoid taking with calcium or other multivalent cations (e.g., aluminum, magnesium, iron) as they can interfere with absorption. Also, be cautious with aspirin or NSAIDs due to potential gastrointestinal irritation.
- Calcium Orotate: Calcium can reduce the absorption of certain drugs such as bisphosphonates, quinolone antibiotics, and tetracycline antibiotics.
Contraindications
- Ibandronic Acid: Not suitable for individuals with esophageal abnormalities, hypocalcemia, or known hypersensitivity to the drug or its components.
- Calcium Orotate: Avoid if you have incomplete bowel movements, kidney stones, kidney disease, or lung disease.
Side Effects
- Ibandronic Acid: Potential side effects include hypertension, dyspepsia, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, muscle cramps, influenza, and other systemic reactions.
- Calcium Orotate: May cause bloating, appetite loss, stomach upset, constipation, nausea, vomiting, unusual weight loss, and infrequent kidney stones.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There is limited research on the safety of this kit during pregnancy. Use only if the benefits outweigh the risks. The presence of the medication in breast milk is unknown; exercise caution if administering to nursing women.
Precautions & Warnings
- Ibandronic Acid: Can cause upper gastrointestinal irritation. Ensure adequate calcium intake and monitor for severe joint or muscle pain. Not recommended for patients with severe renal impairment (Creatinine clearance <30 ml/min).
- Calcium Orotate: Use with caution if allergic to calcium. Taking calcium supplements without food may increase the risk of kidney stones, so consume with meals.
Special Populations
- Pediatric Use: Safety and efficacy in children have not been established.
- Renal and Hepatic Impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary for mild to moderate renal impairment or hepatic impairment.
Therapeutic Class
Minerals for bone formation, specialized mineral preparations.
