Indications
The combination of Calcium Citrate and Calcitriol is prescribed to prevent or treat low blood calcium levels in individuals with insufficient dietary calcium intake. It is used to manage conditions stemming from low calcium levels such as osteoporosis, osteomalacia (softening of bones), rickets, hypoparathyroidism, and latent tetany. Additionally, it may be recommended for ensuring adequate calcium intake in specific patient groups, such as postmenopausal women.
Composition
Each tablet contains:
- Calcium Citrate USP 1200 mg (equivalent to Calcium 252 mg)
- Calcitriol EP 0.25 mcg
Pharmacology
Calcium is crucial for the normal functioning of nerves, cells, muscles, and bones. Insufficient blood calcium prompts the body to extract calcium from bones, weakening them. Calcium citrate is efficiently absorbed on an empty stomach and is less likely to cause constipation. It also requires less stomach acid for absorption.
Calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D3, enhances calcium absorption in the intestines and regulates bone mineralization. In patients with chronic kidney failure, where calcitriol production is impaired, supplementation helps normalize calcium and phosphate absorption, thereby improving bone health.
Dosage & Administration
Take 1-4 tablets daily, with or without food, as per clinical recommendation or directed by a healthcare professional.
Interactions
Calcium may reduce the absorption of certain medications like tetracyclines and quinolones. It can also interact with corticosteroids, thiazide diuretics, and other drugs affecting calcium levels.
