Description

Indications:

This medication serves to prevent or address low blood calcium levels in individuals with insufficient calcium intake through their diets. It is utilized to address conditions such as osteoporosis, osteomalacia, rickets, latent tetany, postmenopausal osteoporosis, senile osteoporosis, juvenile osteoporosis, and drug-induced osteoporosis (due to phenytoin, phenobarbital, or prednisone). Additionally, it supports calcium needs during pregnancy, lactation, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and hypoparathyroidism. Furthermore, it aids in post-hip joint plastic surgery recovery.

Calbostar’s Effects:

Calbostar also exhibits efficacy in managing various inflammatory conditions including arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, spondylitis, cardiovascular ailments, encephalitis, retinitis, phlebitis, colitis, and multiple sclerosis. It contributes to weight management by curbing the appetite of chronic overeaters and mitigating mood swings while enhancing cognitive function. Moreover, Calbostar fortifies cardiac muscles, thus safeguarding heart health, and recent research suggests its potential in reducing the risk of colon cancer.

Pharmacology:

Containing Calcium Orotate, a calcium supplement bonded with orotic acid, this formulation aids calcium transport across cellular membranes, facilitating its intracellular uptake, particularly in bone tissue. Calcium Orotate also supports healthy cartilage maintenance and participates in DNA and RNA synthesis. Renowned for its ability to penetrate complex cell membranes, Calcium Orotate stands out among calcium supplements for its effective metabolism within cartilage.

Dosage & Administration:

For Calcium Orotate 400 mg, typically 2-3 tablets are recommended daily with meals, or as advised by a healthcare professional. For Calcium Orotate 740 mg, 1-2 tablets are usually taken daily with meals, or as directed.

Interactions:

When taken concurrently, Calbostar may reduce the absorption of medications such as biphosphonates, quinolone antibiotics, tetracycline antibiotics, levothyroxine, phenytoin, and tiludronate disodium. Caution is advised with thiazide-type diuretics to avoid hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria risks. Interaction risks also extend to aluminum- and magnesium-containing antacids, mineral oil, stimulant laxatives, glucocorticoids, oral contraceptives, estrogen compounds, and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Contraindications:

Calcium Orotate is contraindicated in conditions including incomplete bowel movements, kidney stones, kidney disease, hyperparathyroidism, excessive urinary or blood calcium levels, and severe dehydration.

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include abdominal bloating, swelling, loss of appetite, upset stomach, constipation, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, increased thirst, fatigue, and kidney stone formation.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

Supplemental Calcium Orotate is recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women to meet increased calcium requirements, potentially reducing the risk of pregnancy-related hypertension.

Precautions & Warnings:

Prior to using Calbostar, individuals with allergies or pre-existing medical conditions such as kidney disease, kidney stones, reduced stomach acid, heart disease, pancreatic disorders, sarcoidosis, or malabsorption syndrome should exercise caution.

Therapeutic Class:

Calbostar belongs to the therapeutic class of minerals aiding bone formation and specific mineral preparations.

Storage Conditions:

Store Calbostar in a cool, dry place away from light and out of reach of children.
