Indications
Brodil is a bronchodilator designed for managing the following conditions:
- Asthma
- Chronic Bronchitis
- Emphysema
- Other respiratory conditions involving airway obstruction

Pharmacology
Salbutamol, a synthetic sympathomimetic agent, primarily activates beta-2 adrenergic receptors. This mechanism promotes relaxation of bronchial smooth muscles, leading to bronchodilation. As a result, pulmonary function improves, as evidenced by spirometric evaluations.
Dosage & Administration
Salbutamol Tablets or Syrup
Children:
- 2–6 years: 2.5 ml syrup, 3–4 times daily
- 6–12 years: 5 ml syrup, 3–4 times daily
- Over 12 years: 5–10 ml syrup (or 2–4 mg tablets), 3–4 times daily
Adults:
- 2–4 mg tablet, 3–4 times daily (maximum single dose: 8 mg tablet)
Salbutamol Respirator Solution
To be used with a nebulizer under medical supervision. Not for injection or oral consumption.
- Intermittent Administration:
- Adults: 0.5–1.0 ml solution diluted with 2–4 ml saline, inhaled over 10 minutes, up to 4 times daily.
- Children: 0.5 ml solution diluted to 2–4 ml saline. Some may require up to 1 ml per session, up to 4 times daily.
- Continuous Administration:
- 1–2 ml solution diluted to 100 ml with saline, administered using a nebulizer. Oxygen supplementation may be required in cases of hypoventilation.
Salbutamol Nebulizer Solution
- Adults & Elderly: 2.5–5 mg up to 4 times a day. Maximum dose: 40 mg/day under hospital supervision.
- Children: 2.5 mg up to 4 times daily, with potential increases to 5 mg as needed.
Salbutamol Inhalation Capsule
- Adults: 1–2 capsules (200 mcg each) every 4–6 hours. Not to exceed recommended doses.
- Children (4+ years): 1 capsule per dose, 3–4 times daily. Dose may increase to 2 capsules if needed.
Exercise-Induced Asthma
- Adults: 400 mcg
- Children: 200 mcg, taken 15–30 minutes before exercise
Side Effects
Common side effects of Brodil include:
- Fine tremors (particularly in the hands)
- Muscle cramps
- Palpitations
- Tachycardia
- Tension, headaches, and peripheral vasodilation (with high doses)
Pregnancy & Lactation
Salbutamol should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh potential risks to the fetus. It’s unclear whether the drug passes into breast milk, so consult your doctor regarding its use while nursing.
Precautions & Warnings
Exercise caution when prescribing Brodil for patients with:
- Hyperthyroidism
- Cardiovascular disease or hypertension
- Diabetes
- Glaucoma
- Aneurysms
High doses may cause hypokalemia, increasing the risk of digitalis-induced cardiac arrhythmia. Prolonged use of high doses may lead to resistance or tachyphylaxis.
Overdose Management
Symptoms of overdose include angina, nausea, vomiting, headache, and tremors. Treatment involves using a cardio-selective beta-blocker cautiously, especially in patients with a history of bronchospasm.
