Indications
Blocid is prescribed to alleviate symptoms caused by the reflux of stomach acid, bile, and pepsin into the esophagus. These symptoms include acid regurgitation, heartburn, and indigestion, which may occur after gastric surgery, due to a hiatus hernia, during pregnancy, or in cases of reflux esophagitis. It is also effective for managing laryngopharyngeal reflux symptoms such as hoarseness, sore throat, and cough. Additionally, Blocid can be used alongside acid-suppressing therapy or following its discontinuation to address gastroesophageal reflux symptoms.
Use this medication only under the guidance of a registered physician.
Pharmacology
Blocid combines Sodium Alginate and Potassium Bicarbonate for its unique action. Sodium Alginate reacts with stomach acid to form a gel, while Potassium Bicarbonate creates carbon dioxide bubbles. These bubbles are trapped within the gel, forming a “raft” that floats on top of stomach contents. This raft prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus, alleviating symptoms like heartburn. The mechanism is physical and does not involve absorption into the bloodstream. The protective raft remains effective for up to four hours, eventually breaking down and being excreted naturally.
