Betameson

Indications

Betameson cream and ointment provide relief for the inflammatory and pruritic symptoms of severe corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses, including:

• Atopic eczema
• Nummular eczema
• Contact dermatitis
• Neurodermatitis
• Anogenital and senile pruritus
• Lichen planus
• Psoriasis

Pharmacology

Betamethasone Dipropionate, a topical corticosteroid, possesses anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties. It induces lipocortins, which antagonize phospholipase A2, thereby reducing the formation and release of inflammatory mediators.

Dosage & Administration

Apply a thin layer once or twice daily over the affected area. Patients with chronic psoriasis showing marked improvement may transition to a pulse dosing regimen for maintenance. However, revert to conventional dosing if relapse occurs.

Contraindications

Avoid Betamethasone Dipropionate in case of hypersensitivity to corticosteroids or any components in the preparation. Contraindicated in viral skin infections, tuberculosis, acne rosacea, fungal skin infections, perioral dermatitis, and ulcerative conditions.

Side Effects

Common side effects include transient burning, dryness, pruritus, and irritation. Rare adverse effects may include tingling, skin tightness, scaling, follicular rash, skin atrophy, erythema, and telangiectasia.

Precautions & Warnings

Avoid eye contact to prevent potential risks like glaucoma and cataract. Discontinue use if irritation occurs and administer appropriate therapy for infections. Exercise caution in prolonged use and avoid occlusive dressings.

Overdose Effects

Acute overdose is unlikely to lead to life-threatening situations. Adhere to prescribed usage guidelines to prevent adverse effects.
