Indications:
Live Pharmacy presents Bactrocin ointment, indicated for the topical treatment of impetigo, a common skin disease caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. It’s also effective in treating folliculitis and furunculosis.
Pharmacology:
Mupirocin, the active ingredient in Bactrocin, is a naturally occurring antibiotic derived from fermentation using Pseudomonas fluorescens. Its broad spectrum targets various bacteria responsible for skin infections, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Streptococcus pyogenes. Mupirocin’s mechanism of action involves binding to bacterial isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase, inhibiting protein synthesis. It demonstrates no cross-resistance with other antimicrobial agents.
Dosage & Administration:
Apply a small amount of Bactrocin ointment to the affected area three times daily for up to 10 days. Its safety and effectiveness are established for ages ranging from 2 months to 16 years.
Interaction:
No interactions have been identified with Bactrocin ointment.
Contraindications:
Avoid Bactrocin ointment if there is a history of hypersensitivity reactions to Mupirocin or any components of the preparation.
Side Effects:
Potential side effects include burning, stinging, itching, rash, nausea, erythema, dry skin, tenderness, swelling, contact dermatitis, and increased exudate.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
While animal studies show no harm to the fetus, caution is advised during pregnancy. It’s unknown whether Mupirocin is excreted in human milk, so nursing mothers should use it cautiously.
Precautions & Warnings:
Bactrocin ointment is not for ophthalmic or intra-nasal use. Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. Avoid contact with eyes and discontinue use if severe irritation occurs. Do not mix with other preparations to maintain stability and antibacterial activity.
Overdose Effects:
Limited data are available on Bactrocin ointment overdose. Supportive treatment with monitoring is recommended in case of overdose.
Therapeutic Class:
Bactrocin ointment falls under the category of topical antibiotic preparations.
Storage Conditions:
Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Avoid freezing, and keep out of reach of children.
