Indications
Bactrobex Ointment is prescribed for the topical management of impetigo, a common skin infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. It is also effective in treating folliculitis and furunculosis.
Pharmacology
Mupirocin, the active ingredient in Bactrobex Ointment, is a naturally derived antibiotic produced through fermentation with Pseudomonas fluorescens. It targets a broad spectrum of bacteria responsible for various skin infections, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other staphylococci and streptococci. Mupirocin also combats certain gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Haemophilus influenzae. It works by selectively binding to bacterial isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. This unique mechanism of action means Mupirocin does not cross-resist with other antimicrobial classes and exhibits bactericidal properties at topical application concentrations. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) for Mupirocin is generally eight to thirty times higher than the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for relevant pathogens.
Dosage & Administration
Apply a small amount of Bactrobex Ointment to the affected area three times daily for up to 10 days. The ointment is proven safe and effective for use in children aged 2 months to 16 years, supported by comprehensive clinical studies.
Note: Use Bactrobex Ointment as directed by your healthcare provider.
Interactions
No significant drug interactions have been reported with Bactrobex Ointment.
Contraindications
Bactrobex Ointment should not be used by individuals with a known hypersensitivity to Mupirocin or any of its components.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include burning, stinging, pain, itching, rash, nausea, erythema, dry skin, tenderness, swelling, contact dermatitis, and increased exudate.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Animal studies have shown no fetal harm from Mupirocin Ointment. However, due to the lack of clinical experience during pregnancy, it should be used only if the benefits outweigh the risks. The excretion of Mupirocin in human milk is unknown; thus, caution is advised when administering to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Bactrobex Ointment is not intended for ophthalmic or intra-nasal use. Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. Avoid contact with the eyes, especially when used on the face. Do not use in conjunction with cannulae or at central venous cannulation sites. Discontinue use if sensitization or severe local irritation occurs and seek alternative treatments. Avoid mixing Bactrobex Ointment with other products to prevent dilution and loss of antibacterial efficacy.
