Pharmacology
Astaxanthin functions as a potent antioxidant through a dual action mechanism: it suppresses singlet oxygen and inhibits lipid peroxidation, thereby neutralizing harmful free radicals. Absorbed via passive diffusion in the intestines alongside fatty acids, Astaxanthin is incorporated into lipoproteins and transported to the liver, where over 70% is found in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) plasma. Its highest concentrations are located in the small intestine, followed by subcutaneous and abdominal fat, spleen, liver, heart, kidneys, and skin, with the least found in muscle tissue.
Dosage & Administration
For adults (18 years and older), the recommended daily dosage is 4 mg, ideally taken with or just before breakfast.
- 4 mg: As a strong antioxidant, supports cardiovascular health and immune function.
- 4-8 mg: Enhances skin condition, protects against sun damage, aids recovery from CNS injuries, and shields eyes from cataracts and macular degeneration.
- 8-12 mg: Alleviates inflammation (e.g., arthritis).
- 16 mg: Reduces infertility risks.
Always consult your healthcare provider before use.
