Azmasol is prescribed for:
- Asthma management
- Chronic bronchitis relief
- Emphysema treatment
- Other conditions causing airway obstruction
Pharmacology
Salbutamol, a synthetic sympathomimetic agent, primarily targets beta-2 adrenergic receptors. It facilitates bronchodilation by relaxing bronchial smooth muscles, improving pulmonary function as indicated by spirometric tests.
Dosage & Administration
Salbutamol Tablet or Syrup:
- Children:
- 2-6 years: 2.5 ml syrup, 3-4 times daily
- 6-12 years: 5 ml syrup, 3-4 times daily
- Over 12 years: 5-10 ml syrup, 3-4 times daily (or 2-4 mg tablet, 3-4 times daily)
- Adults: 2-4 mg tablet, 3-4 times daily. Maximum single dose: 8 mg.
Salbutamol Respirator Solution:
- Intermittent Administration:
- Adults: 0.5-1.0 ml up to four times a day; maximum 40 mg/day under strict medical supervision. Dilute 0.5-1 ml to 2-4 ml with sterile saline.
- Children: 0.5 ml diluted to 2-4 ml with saline, up to four times daily. Higher doses may be needed.
- Continuous Administration: Dilute 1-2 ml to 100 ml with saline. Add oxygen if risk of hypoventilation.
Salbutamol Injection:
- Adults: Prepare infusion by diluting 5 ml in 500 ml of IV solution (10 mcg/ml). Infuse at rates of 3-20 mcg/minute.
- Children: Dosage not established. Use cautiously if needed.
Salbutamol Inhalation Capsule:
- Adults: 200 mcg capsule every 4-6 hours. Max: two capsules per dose.
- Children (4+ years): One capsule for acute bronchospasm; up to two capsules as needed.
Exercise-induced Asthma:
- Adults: 400 mcg 15-30 minutes before exercise
- Children: 200 mcg 15-30 minutes before exercise
Side Effects
Common side effects include muscle tremors, palpitations, cramps, tachycardia, headaches, and peripheral vasodilation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if benefits outweigh risks. The drug’s presence in human milk is unknown; weigh the benefits against potential risks before breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
Caution advised for patients with hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular issues, hypertension, or diabetes. Monitor for hypokalemia and tachyphylaxis with prolonged high doses. Use with care in those on antihypertensive therapy.
Overdose Effects
Overdosage may cause angina, headaches, nausea, and tremors. A cardio-selective beta-blocker is preferred for treatment, but use cautiously in patients with bronchospasm history.
