Indications
Anadol SR is prescribed for managing moderate to severe pain, including:
- Pain following surgery
- Colic and spastic pain
- Cancer-related pain
- Joint, neck, and back pain
- Pain associated with osteoporosis
Pharmacology
Anadol SR contains Tramadol, a synthetic analgesic that acts centrally. It inhibits the reuptake of serotonin and noradrenaline, altering the transmission of pain signals by activating descending serotonergic and noradrenergic pathways involved in pain relief. Tramadol’s analgesic effects stem from its stimulation of mu-opioid receptors and indirect modulation of central monoaminergic pathways.
Dosage & Administration
For capsules or tablets, typical doses range from 50 to 100 mg every four to six hours. Initial doses vary for acute (100 mg) and chronic pain (50 mg), with subsequent doses adjusted based on pain severity. The total daily oral dosage should not exceed 400 mg.
For sustained-release capsules or tablets, one dose every 12 hours is recommended, not exceeding 400 mg per day. Injections (50-100 mg every 4-6 hours) and suppositories (100 mg every 6 hours) are also available for different pain management needs.
Interactions
Physicians generally need not worry about interactions with Anadol SR, except with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and carbamazepine, which can affect metabolism and dosing.
Contraindications
Tramadol is contraindicated in individuals hypersensitive to it and those with acute intoxication from alcohol, opioids, or psychotropic drugs.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include dizziness, nausea, constipation, headache, and drowsiness. Less common effects include allergic reactions, weight loss, and gastrointestinal issues.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Tramadol use during pregnancy is not well-established for safety. It crosses the placenta, and caution is advised during breastfeeding due to its presence in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
Special precautions are necessary for patients at risk of respiratory depression, those dependent on opioids, and those using CNS depressants or MAOIs concurrently.
Use in Special Populations
Anadol SR can be administered to children over 1 year old, with specific dosing considerations. It is not recommended for children under 14 years old or in capsule form for children due to limited studies.
Therapeutic Class
Anadol SR belongs to the class of opioid analgesics.
Storage Conditions
Store Anadol SR below 30°C, away from light and moisture, and out of reach of children.
