Indications
For managing and preventing Adsalt deficiency.
Pharmacology
Sodium chloride, a vital component for maintaining osmotic balance in bodily fluids, plays a key role in fluid movement and salt diffusion within cells. Sodium Chloride tablets replenish sodium levels in cases of deficiency. Easily absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, it primarily resides in extracellular fluid. Normal sodium loss occurs through sweat, while excess is excreted in urine to maintain osmotic balance.
Dosage & Administration
Swallow tablets whole with water (approximately 70 ml per tablet for normal kidney function to prevent hypernatremia), avoiding chewing.
- Adults: Prophylactic dosage ranges from 8 to 16 tablets daily. For treatment, adjust dosage based on individual requirements, up to a maximum of 40 tablets daily for severe salt depletion. Muscle cramp control during routine maintenance hemodialysis typically requires 20-32 tablets per session. In chronic renal salt-wasting cases, up to 40 tablets daily might be necessary with adequate fluid intake.
- Children: Dosage tailored to individual needs.
- Elderly: No specific dosage adjustments needed.
Interactions
In hypertensive patients with chronic renal failure, Adsalt 300 mg tablets may potentially diminish the effectiveness of antihypertensive medications.
Contraindications
Avoid Sodium Chloride in situations where salt retention is undesired, such as edema, heart disease, cardiac decompensation, and primary or secondary aldosteronism, or when therapy aims to induce salt and water loss.
Side Effects
No adverse effects reported at recommended dosages.
Pregnancy & Lactation
No additional precautions necessary during pregnancy.
Precautions & Warnings
No specific warnings or precautions required.
Overdose Effects
Excessive Adsalt intake can lead to hypernatremia, characterized by various symptoms. Treatment involves restricting sodium intake, using sodium-free liquids, and, in severe cases, employing loop diuretics like frusemide with potassium supplementation if needed.
Therapeutic Class
Oral electrolyte preparations.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C in a dry, light-protected area. Keep out of children’s reach.
