Indications
Rotacal Tablet is a calcium supplement designed to prevent or treat low calcium levels in individuals who do not get enough calcium through their diet. It effectively addresses calcium deficiencies or fulfills additional calcium needs in conditions such as osteoporosis (including postmenopausal, senile, juvenile, and drug-induced osteoporosis), osteomalacia, rickets, latent tetany, hypoparathyroidism, and during pregnancy and lactation. It is also beneficial for managing premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and supporting recovery following hip joint plastic surgery.
Rotacal has proven effective in managing various inflammatory conditions like arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, spondylitis, and multiple sclerosis. It also aids in reducing cardiovascular ailments, encephalitis, retinitis, phlebitis, and colitis. Furthermore, Rotacal is recognized for helping control weight by suppressing frequent hunger in chronic overeaters and mitigating the impact of mood swings. It has demonstrated cognitive-enhancing properties and supports heart health by improving cardiac muscle function. Recent research suggests that Rotacal may help lower the risk of colon cancer.

Pharmacology
Rotacal contains Calcium Orotate, a superior calcium supplement that combines calcium with orotic acid, an amino acid chelating ligand. This unique combination facilitates the efficient transport of calcium through cellular membranes, enhancing its absorption, particularly in bone tissue. Calcium Orotate also supports the maintenance of healthy cartilage and plays a crucial role in the synthesis of DNA and RNA. Among calcium supplements, Calcium Orotate stands out due to its ability to penetrate complex cell membranes and metabolize effectively in cartilage tissue.
Dosage & Administration
- Calcium Orotate 400 mg: Typically, 2-3 tablets are recommended with meals or as directed by a healthcare provider.
- Calcium Orotate 740 mg: Generally, 1-2 tablets should be taken with meals or as advised by a physician.
Consult a registered healthcare provider before using this medication.
Drug Interactions
Rotacal may reduce the absorption of certain medications when taken together, including:
- Bisphosphonates (e.g., alendronate)
- Quinolone antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin)
- Tetracycline antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline, minocycline)
- Levothyroxine (for thyroid hormone replacement)
- Phenytoin (anticonvulsant)
- Tiludronate disodium (for Paget’s disease)
Additionally, interactions with thiazide diuretics can increase the risk of hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria. Calcium absorption may also be impaired by mineral oil, stimulant laxatives, and antacids containing aluminum or magnesium. Long-term use of glucocorticoids like prednisone may lead to calcium depletion and osteoporosis. Oral contraceptives and estrogen compounds can reduce calcium levels. NSAIDs, aspirin, and ibuprofen may deplete calcium levels as well.
Contraindications
Calcium Orotate should not be used by individuals with the following conditions:
- Infrequent or incomplete bowel movements
- Kidney disease or kidney stones
- Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in the blood)
- Hypercalciuria (high calcium levels in the urine)
- Dehydration or extreme loss of body water
- Increased parathyroid gland activity
Side Effects
Common side effects of Rotacal may include:
- Abdominal bloating and swelling
- Loss of appetite
- Upset stomach, constipation, nausea, or vomiting

Always consult your doctor before using any supplement during pregnancy or lactation.
