Indications

Cartilex Plus is a dietary supplement indicated for the management of osteoarthritis in various joints including the knee, hip, spine, and hands. Pharmacology

Glucosamine is a naturally occurring amino-sugar found in the body and in certain foods. It is crucial for the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) like Hyaluronic Acid, Chondroitin Sulfate, and Keratan Sulfate, which are essential components of cartilage. Glucosamine supplementation increases its levels in the body, supporting cartilage repair and regeneration, and activating chondrocytes to produce GAGs and proteoglycans that maintain joint health.

Chondroitin Sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan found in connective tissue, especially in cartilage. It helps prevent the breakdown of healthy cartilage by inhibiting Matrix Metalloproteinase (MMP) enzymes. Together, Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate work synergistically to support joint health, alleviate osteoarthritis symptoms, and potentially slow disease progression. This combination has shown effectiveness in treating severe osteoarthritis, offering comparable pain relief to NSAIDs but with better tolerability.

Additionally, it aids in the healing phase of musculoskeletal injuries such as tendon and ligament strains.

Dosage & Administration

• 250/200 mg Tablet: Take 1 to 2 tablets, three times daily. Dosage can be adjusted based on response and body weight. For cost-effectiveness, the dose can be tapered after 60 days.
  Typical Daily Dosage Based on Body Weight:
  • Under 54 kg: 1000 mg Glucosamine & 800 mg Chondroitin
  • 54 kg to 91 kg: 1500 mg Glucosamine & 1200 mg Chondroitin
  • Over 91 kg: 2000 mg Glucosamine & 1600 mg Chondroitin
• 750/600 mg Tablet: Take 1 tablet twice daily or as directed by a healthcare provider.

Interactions

There are no significant drug interactions reported between Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and medications like antibiotics, antidepressants, antihypertensives, and more. However, Chondroitin may enhance the blood-thinning effects of anticoagulants such as Warfarin and Heparin.

Contraindications

While there are no major contraindications for Glucosamine and Chondroitin, individuals with a known allergy to shellfish or sulfur should avoid these supplements.

Side Effects

Clinical studies on Glucosamine and Chondroitin show no significant side effects. Rarely, mild and reversible symptoms like intestinal flatulence may occur, but these effects are generally similar to a placebo.

Pregnancy & Lactation

The safety of Glucosamine and Chondroitin during pregnancy and lactation has not been well-studied. It is recommended to consult a healthcare professional before using these supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

• Diabetes Mellitus: Monitor blood glucose levels regularly while taking Glucosamine.
• Renal or Hepatic Insufficiency: No special studies were conducted, but administration should be done under medical supervision in patients with severe liver or kidney issues.
• Children: Not recommended for children.
