Pharmacology

Mupirocin, the active ingredient in Systop Ointment, is a naturally occurring antibiotic that acts as a potent antibacterial agent. It works by disrupting bacterial protein synthesis, specifically by inhibiting isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase. This action is effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, including MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), Streptococcus pyogenes, and gram-negative pathogens like E. coli and Haemophilus influenzae. Mupirocin is bactericidal when applied topically, offering fast relief from skin infections.

Dosage & Administration

• Adults & Children (over 2 months): Apply a small amount of Systop Ointment to the affected area 3 times daily for up to 10 days.
• Pediatric Use: Proven safe and effective for children aged 2 months to 16 years for the treatment of impetigo.

Contraindications

Systop Ointment should not be used by individuals who have shown hypersensitivity to Mupirocin or any of its ingredients.

Side Effects

Pregnancy & Lactation

Mupirocin has not shown harmful effects in animal reproduction studies. However, it should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh potential risks. There is limited information on its presence in human milk, so caution is advised when using during lactation.

Precautions & Warnings

• Not for ophthalmic or intra-nasal use.

Overdose Effects
