Indications:
Desotop Gel is specifically formulated for the treatment of mild to moderate atopic dermatitis in patients aged 3 months and older. Always use this medication as directed by a registered healthcare provider.
Pharmacology:
Desonide gel contains Desonide, a synthetic, non-fluorinated corticosteroid designed for topical dermatological use. Topical corticosteroids are known for their anti-inflammatory, antipruritic (itch-reducing), and vasoconstrictive properties. The precise mechanism by which these steroids reduce inflammation is not fully understood. It is believed that corticosteroids work by stimulating the production of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins (lipocortins). These proteins help regulate the production of potent inflammatory mediators, such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes, by preventing the release of arachidonic acid from membrane phospholipids. When applied to the skin, Desonide gel is absorbed and metabolized in a manner similar to systemically administered corticosteroids.
Dosage & Administration:
Desonide Gel is for external use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected area twice daily, gently massaging it into the skin. Treatment should be discontinued once control is achieved. If there is no improvement after 4 weeks, discontinue use. Desonide Gel should not be used with occlusive dressings.
Pediatric Use:
The safety and effectiveness of Desonide Gel in children under 3 months have not been studied. Therefore, it is not recommended for use in infants under this age group. Always follow the advice of a registered healthcare provider.
Contraindications:
Desonide Gel should not be used by individuals with a known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in the product.
Side Effects:
The most common side effects include burning, rash, and itching at the application site. Other rare local side effects of topical corticosteroids may include folliculitis, acne-like eruptions, skin discoloration (hypopigmentation), perioral dermatitis, secondary infections, skin thinning (atrophy), stretch marks (striae), and heat rash (miliaria). These effects are more likely to occur with the use of occlusive dressings, especially when using higher potency corticosteroids.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy Category C – There are no sufficient studies in pregnant women. Therefore, Desonide Gel should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits outweigh any risks to the fetus. Systemically administered corticosteroids may be present in human milk, potentially affecting growth or causing other adverse effects. It is unclear whether topical corticosteroids can result in significant systemic absorption to be detectable in breast milk. Caution is recommended when using Desonide Gel while breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Desotop Gel should be used as prescribed by a healthcare provider. It is for external use only, and contact with the eyes should be avoided. Do not apply to the underarm or groin areas in pediatric patients. If irritation occurs, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider. Prolonged use of topical corticosteroids can lead to systemic absorption, potentially suppressing the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which may result in corticosteroid insufficiency after discontinuation. If the condition does not improve promptly, stop using Desotop Gel until any infection is controlled.
Overdose Effects:
Excessive topical application of Desotop Gel can lead to systemic absorption, potentially causing systemic side effects.
Therapeutic Class:
Other Topical Corticosteroids
Storage Conditions:
Store Desotop Gel at temperatures below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
