Indications for Use of Algicid
Algicid is effective in managing symptoms associated with the reflux of acid, bile, and pepsin into the esophagus. These symptoms may include heartburn, acid regurgitation, indigestion, and discomfort post-gastric surgery, or conditions such as hiatus hernia. It is also beneficial during pregnancy and in cases of reflux esophagitis, including related symptoms like hoarseness, sore throat, cough, and voice disorders. Algicid can also aid in alleviating gastroesophageal reflux symptoms during or after acid-suppressive therapy.
Usage Advisory: Always follow a registered medical professional’s guidance when using this medication.
Pharmacological Action of Algicid
Algicid is a combination of Sodium Alginate and Potassium Bicarbonate, both of which work together to provide relief from acid reflux symptoms. Sodium Alginate is a naturally occurring substance that reacts with stomach acid to form a protective gel. When combined with Potassium Bicarbonate, which releases carbon dioxide bubbles, the gel traps the bubbles, creating a “raft” that floats on top of the stomach contents. This raft acts as a barrier, preventing stomach acid from refluxing into the esophagus, thus alleviating heartburn and discomfort.
The action of Algicid is purely mechanical and does not rely on systemic absorption. The raft formed by the gel can last up to 4 hours, after which it is gradually broken down and eliminated via the digestive system.
