Indications
Sporium is recommended for individuals experiencing reduced tear production due to ocular inflammation linked to dry eye syndrome, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca.
Please follow the advice of a registered healthcare professional before using this medication.
Pharmacology
This sterile ophthalmic formulation of Cyclosporine serves as an immunomodulator, targeting patients whose tear production is diminished due to ocular inflammation associated with keratoconjunctivitis sicca.
Dosage & Administration
Administer one drop of Sporium into each affected eye twice daily, spaced approximately 12 hours apart. It can be used alongside artificial tears; ensure to allow a 15-minute interval between the two products.
Pediatric Use: The safety and effectiveness of Cyclosporine ophthalmic solution have not been confirmed in pediatric patients under 18 years of age.
Please follow the advice of a registered healthcare professional before using this medication.
Contraindications
Cyclosporine should not be used by individuals with active ocular infections or those with known or suspected hypersensitivity to any components of the formulation.
Side Effects
The most frequently reported side effect is ocular burning. Additional side effects may include conjunctival hyperemia, discharge, excessive tearing (epiphora), eye discomfort, foreign body sensation, itching, stinging, and visual disturbances, primarily blurriness.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Sporium is categorized as pregnancy category C. Adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking; therefore, it should only be used if clearly necessary. While Cyclosporine is known to pass into human milk after systemic administration, the excretion of Cyclosporine from topical applications has not been thoroughly studied. Even though blood levels are typically undetectable after topical application, caution is advised when administering this medication to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Avoid using Sporium while wearing contact lenses. Individuals with reduced tear production should generally refrain from wearing contact lenses. If contact lenses are used, remove them before applying the solution and wait 15 minutes before reinserting them. Sporium may cause temporary blurred vision; therefore, do not drive, operate machinery, or engage in any activities requiring clear vision until you are confident in your ability to do so safely.
