Pharmacology
Proper nutrition is essential for preventing osteoporosis and other bone-related conditions. Key nutrients like Calcium, Magnesium, and Vitamin D3 are vital for bone health, as Vitamin D3 enhances Calcium absorption. Magnesium also contributes to bone strength. Recent studies highlight the importance of micronutrients such as Copper, Manganese, Zinc, and Boron in maintaining bone integrity, particularly in individuals with osteoporosis.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: Take 1 film-coated tablet twice daily, preferably one in the morning and one in the evening, or as directed by a healthcare professional. It’s best to take with or shortly after meals, along with a full glass of water.
- Children (ages 3-7): 1 effervescent tablet daily.
- Children (ages 7 and older): 1 to 2 effervescent tablets daily.
Always consult a registered healthcare professional before use.
Interactions
Be cautious of hypercalcemia in patients on thiazide diuretics, which may reduce urinary calcium excretion. Monitor calcium levels in patients using digitalis or other cardiac glycosides, as calcium can interfere with their effects. Certain foods and medications can reduce calcium absorption; it’s recommended to space calcium intake at least four hours apart from these substances.
Contraindications
Absolute Contraindications: Hypercalcemia due to conditions like myeloma, bone metastasis, sarcoidosis, primary hyperparathyroidism, Vitamin D3 overdose, and severe renal failure. Hypersensitivity to any ingredients is also a contraindication.
Relative Contraindications: Osteoporosis related to prolonged immobility, renal stones, and severe hypercalciuria.
Side Effects
Calcium supplements can occasionally cause mild gastrointestinal issues, such as constipation, nausea, or diarrhea. Rarely, vitamin D3 may result in skin rashes. Long-term high-dose use can lead to hypercalciuria or hypercalcemia.
Pregnancy & Lactation
During pregnancy and lactation, treatment should be under medical supervision. Calcium and Vitamin D3 requirements increase during these periods, and supplementation should account for dietary sources. If both calcium and iron are required, take them at different times. Excessive Vitamin D3 can have teratogenic effects.
Precautions & Warnings
Patients with renal issues should be monitored closely for calcium levels and urinary excretion. Regular checks are essential for those with a history of renal stones or hypercalciuria. Monitor serum and urinary calcium levels during prolonged treatment, adjusting as necessary.
Overdose Effects
Overdosage may present symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dry mouth, appetite loss, metallic taste, stomach cramps, diarrhea, headaches, and constipation.
Therapeutic Class
Specific combined mineral and vitamin preparations.
Storage Conditions
Store in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of reach of children.
