Indications
Indicated for the treatment and prevention of deficiencies in Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc, particularly during pregnancy and lactation.
Composition
Each capsule contains:
- Elemental Iron: 50 mg (as carbonyl iron INN)
- Folic Acid BP: 500 mcg
- Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate USP: 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg of Zinc)
Pharmacology
This timed-release capsule combines Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate. Carbonyl Iron contains over 98% elemental iron, offering high bioavailability and low toxicity, making it a safer and more effective option for iron supplementation.
Dosage & Administration
For adults: Take one capsule daily before meals or as directed by a healthcare provider.
Interactions
Carbonyl Iron may reduce the absorption of tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics, as well as medications like levodopa and levothyroxine. Folic Acid can interact with antiepileptic drugs, potentially lowering plasma levels of phenobarbital, phenytoin, and primidone.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any components or those experiencing iron overload.
Side Effects
Possible gastrointestinal side effects include nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea. Dark stools may occur. Carbonyl Iron pellets are included in the capsules to minimize gastrointestinal irritation. Rare allergic reactions may also be observed.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Medication use during the first trimester should be avoided unless iron deficiency is clearly established. Supplementation of Iron, Zinc, and Folic Acid is recommended during the remainder of pregnancy when dietary intake is inadequate.
Precautions & Warnings
Caution is advised in patients with iron overload conditions such as hemochromatosis or hemolytic anemia. Lack of response to treatment may require further evaluation to rule out other causes of anemia. Patients with renal impairment should be monitored for potential zinc accumulation.
Overdose Effects
Symptoms of overdose may include decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, dark stools, rapid pulse, fever, coma, and seizures.
