Indications
Decomit Nasal Spray is used for both preventing and treating seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, including hay fever, as well as non-allergic (vasomotor) rhinitis. It also helps in preventing the recurrence of nasal polyps after surgical removal.
Pharmacology
Beclomethasone Dipropionate, when applied topically to the nasal mucosa, offers anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive effects. While the precise mechanism is not fully understood, it is believed to reduce the presence of mediator cells such as basophils, leukocytes, and mast cells at the epithelial level. Additionally, it may decrease the number of eosinophils, lessen sensory nerve sensitivity, reduce secretory responses to cholinergic stimuli, and inhibit fibroblast activity. Other potential mechanisms include preventing capillary dilation and permeability, stabilizing lysosomal membranes, and inhibiting the release of proteolytic enzymes.
Dosage
The dosage of intranasal Beclomethasone Dipropionate should be tailored to the individual’s needs and response.
- Adults: Typically, the dosage is 2 sprays (50 µg per spray) in each nostril twice daily. Depending on the patient’s response, 1 spray in each nostril 3 to 4 times daily may be sufficient. Do not exceed a total daily dose of 400 µg (8 sprays).
- Children (6 to 12 years): The usual dose is 1 spray in each nostril twice daily. For those not adequately responding or with more severe symptoms, 2 sprays in each nostril twice daily may be necessary.
- Children under 6 years: Usage is not recommended as safety studies have not been conducted. After the initial days, the dose may be reduced to 100 µg (1 spray in each nostril) once daily for maintenance, based on individual response.
Always follow your physician’s advice regarding medication use.
Administration
How to Use the Nasal Spray:
- Gently shake the bottle and remove the dust cover.
- Hold the spray with your forefinger and middle finger on either side of the nozzle and your thumb underneath. Press down until a fine mist appears. If using for the first time or if unused for over a week, press the applicator several times until a fine mist emerges.
- Clear your nostrils by gently blowing your nose.
- Close one nostril and insert the applicator into the open nostril. Tilt your head slightly forward, keep the spray upright, inhale through your nose, and press the applicator firmly to release a spray.
- Exhale through your mouth.
- Repeat the steps for the other nostril if necessary.
Cleaning:
The nasal spray should be cleaned at least weekly. Follow these steps:
- Remove the dust cover.
- Gently pull off the nasal applicator.
- Wash the applicator and dust cover in warm water.
- Shake off excess water and let them air dry at room temperature. Avoid using heat.

Contraindications
Decomit Nasal Spray is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to any of its components. Nasal and paranasal sinus infections should be treated appropriately but are not specific contraindications for the use of this spray.
Side Effects
Rare side effects may include nasal septum perforation. Other infrequent effects include dryness and irritation of the nose and throat, unpleasant taste and smell, and occasional nosebleeds. Very rare effects might include wheezing, cataracts, glaucoma, and increased intraocular pressure.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use of Beclomethasone during pregnancy should be based on a risk-benefit assessment. Most pregnant women may require a lower dose of corticosteroids due to natural increases in corticosteroid production. Caution is advised when administering Beclomethasone to breastfeeding women as corticosteroids are excreted in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
Treat any nasal or paranasal infections appropriately. When transitioning from systemic steroids to Beclomethasone Nasal Spray, monitor for any potential impairment of adrenal function.
Overdose Effects
Inhaling excessive doses over a short period may suppress hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function. No special emergency actions are necessary; simply continue the treatment at the recommended dose. HPA function typically recovers within one or two days.
