Description

Indications

Neofloxin 0.3% ophthalmic solution is prescribed for the treatment of corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis, and blepharitis caused by bacteria susceptible to ciprofloxacin.

Composition

Each milliliter of Neofloxin eye drops contains:

  • Active Ingredient: Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride BP, equivalent to Ciprofloxacin 3 mg
  • Preservative: Benzalkonium Chloride 0.06 mg

Pharmacology

Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against various Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. It works by inhibiting the A subunits of DNA gyrase (topoisomerase), essential for bacterial DNA replication, thereby exerting a bactericidal effect.

Dosage & Administration

  • For Corneal Ulcers: Instill 2 drops into the affected eye every 15 minutes for the first 6 hours, then every 30 minutes for the remainder of the first day. On the second day, use 2 drops hourly, and from the third to the fourteenth day, apply 2 drops every 4 hours. Continue treatment beyond 14 days if necessary until corneal re-epithelialization is achieved.
  • For Bacterial Conjunctivitis/Blepharitis: Apply 1 drop to the conjunctival sac(s) every 2 hours for 2 days, then every 4 hours for the next 5 days.
  • Pediatric Use: Safety and efficacy in children under 1 year of age have not been established.

Interaction

While specific drug interaction studies with Neofloxin ophthalmic solution are not available, systemic quinolones may affect the metabolism of drugs such as theophylline, caffeine, and warfarin. Monitor patients for potential interactions when used concurrently with these medications.

Contraindications

Do not use Neofloxin if you have a history of hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or any component of the product. Sensitivity to other quinolones may also contraindicate its use.

Side Effects

Common side effects include local burning or discomfort. In studies, approximately 17% of patients experienced white crystalline deposits. Other less common effects include lid margin crusting, foreign body sensation, itching, conjunctival redness, and a bad taste. Rarely, corneal staining, allergic reactions, lid edema, and vision changes may occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use Neofloxin during pregnancy only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus.

Precautions & Warnings

Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. Discontinue use if a skin rash or hypersensitivity reaction occurs.

Overdose Effects

In case of overdose, flush the eye(s) with warm tap water.

Therapeutic Class
