Indications

Zolax is prescribed for:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Short-term relief of anxiety symptoms
  • Anxiety associated with depression
  • Panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia

Pharmacology

Alprazolam, an analog of the 1,4-benzodiazepine class, acts as an anxiolytic with hypnotic and anticonvulsive properties. It interacts with the Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA)-benzodiazepine receptor complex to produce its effects. Like other benzodiazepines, it exhibits dose-dependent CNS depressant activity, ranging from mild impairment to hypnosis.

Dosage & Administration

Treatment typically starts with 0.25 to 0.5 mg of Zolax three times daily, adjusting as needed every 3 to 4 days by increments not exceeding 1 mg/day. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 4 mg, although some patients with panic disorder may require up to 10 mg daily, necessitating periodic reassessment and potential dosage adjustments.

Dosage should be tailored to each individual for optimal efficacy with the lowest effective dose. If initial side effects occur, dosage may be reduced. When discontinuing therapy, gradual reduction by no more than 0.5 mg every three days is recommended.

For elderly patients or those with advanced liver disease, initial dosing typically starts at 0.25 mg two or three times daily, with gradual adjustments based on tolerance and response.

Alprazolam 1 mg should be taken once daily, preferably in the morning, by patients transitioning from multiple doses of Alprazolam 0.25/0.5 mg. Tablets should be swallowed whole, without chewing, crushing, or breaking.

Interactions

The CNS-depressant effects of Zolax may be heightened by concurrent use of other psychotropic drugs, anticonvulsants, antihistamines, alcohol, or oral contraceptives.

Side Effects

Side effects, if experienced, typically manifest early in treatment and often diminish with continued use. Common side effects include drowsiness, lightheadedness, depression, headache, confusion, dry mouth, and constipation.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Alprazolam is classified as pregnancy category D, indicating it should be avoided during pregnancy. Due to its excretion in breast milk, nursing mothers should not use Alprazolam.

Precautions & Warnings

Due to the potential for psychological and physical dependence, Zolax should not have its dosage increased or be discontinued abruptly without medical guidance. Treatment duration should be determined by healthcare providers. Caution is advised when administering Zolax to patients with hepatic or renal impairment, chronic pulmonary insufficiency, or sleep apnea.

Use in Special Populations

The safety and efficacy of Zolax in individuals under 18 years old have not been established.

Overdose Effects

Signs of Zolax overdose include somnolence, confusion, impaired coordination, reduced reflexes, and coma. Immediate general supportive measures and, if necessary, gastric lavage should be initiated in cases of overdose.

Therapeutic Class

Zolax belongs to the benzodiazepine sedatives class.

Storage Conditions

Store Zolax below 30°C, protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children.
