Indications
Alendronic Acid & Vitamin D3 is prescribed for:
- Treating osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
- Managing osteoporosis in men.
- Increasing bone mass and reducing fractures, including hip and spine fractures.
Pharmacology
Alendronate Sodium, a bisphosphonate, inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. Administered before breakfast, it rapidly localizes to bone, enhancing bone mass by inhibiting osteoclast activity. Vitamin D is essential for normal bone formation, preventing deficiencies associated with increased fracture risk.
Dosage
For osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men, a weekly dose of 70 mg alendronate with 5600 IU vitamin D3 is generally recommended.
Administration
Take Alendronate & Colecalciferol at least 30 minutes before the first meal or drink of the day with plain water to optimize absorption. Avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes post-dose.
Interactions
Avoid concomitant use with calcium supplements, antacids, and certain medications to prevent reduced absorption. NSAIDs and aspirin may increase the risk of upper GI adverse events.
Contraindications
Do not use in patients with esophageal abnormalities, inability to stand/sit upright, hypersensitivity to any component, or hypocalcemia.
Side Effects
Side effects are generally mild and may include esophageal irritation, abdominal discomfort, and musculoskeletal pain.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if benefits outweigh risks. Caution advised during lactation due to potential excretion in breast milk.
Precautions
Correct mineral disturbances before treatment initiation. Use with caution in patients with upper GI disorders.
Special Populations
No dosage adjustment needed for elderly or those with mild-to-moderate renal insufficiency. Not recommended for severe renal impairment.
Overdose Effects
Excess intake may lead to hypocalcemia, GI disturbances, or vitamin D toxicity symptoms.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
