Indications
Zolax is prescribed for managing anxiety disorders, providing short-term relief from anxiety, addressing anxiety associated with depression, and treating panic disorders, with or without agoraphobia.
Pharmacology
Zolax contains Alprazolam, a triazole derivative of the benzodiazepine class. This anxiolytic medication offers hypnotic and anticonvulsant effects. Alprazolam exerts its therapeutic benefits by interacting with the Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA)-benzodiazepine receptor complex, producing dose-dependent CNS depressant effects that range from mild impairment to full hypnosis.
Dosage & Administration
For initial treatment, start with a dose of 0.25 to 0.5 mg, administered three times daily. The dosage may be increased by up to 1 mg/day at intervals of 3 to 4 days, with a maximum of 4 mg/day. Some patients with panic disorders may require up to 10 mg/day; periodic reassessment is necessary. For elderly or hepatically impaired patients, begin with 0.25 mg, two or three times daily, with gradual adjustments as tolerated. For patients on multiple dosages, 1 mg should be taken once daily, preferably in the morning. Tablets should be swallowed whole without chewing, crushing, or breaking.
Always follow your physician’s instructions for dosage and administration.
Interaction
The CNS depressant effects of Zolax may be enhanced by concomitant use of other psychotropic drugs, anticonvulsants, antihistamines, alcohol, and oral contraceptives.
Side Effects
Common side effects include drowsiness and light-headedness, typically occurring at the start of treatment. Other possible effects may include depression, headache, confusion, dry mouth, and constipation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Zolax is classified as pregnancy Category D and should be avoided during pregnancy. It is likely excreted in breast milk, so nursing mothers should avoid using this medication.
Precautions & Warnings
Zolax can lead to psychological and physical dependence, so avoid abrupt discontinuation or dose increases without medical advice. Use cautiously in patients with hepatic or renal impairment, chronic pulmonary conditions, or sleep apnea.
Use in Special Populations
The safety and efficacy of Zolax in individuals under 18 years of age have not been established.
Overdose Effects
Overdose symptoms may include somnolence, confusion, impaired coordination, diminished reflexes, and potentially coma. Immediate supportive care and gastric lavage are recommended.
