Indications

This product is recommended for the treatment and prevention of iron, folic acid, and zinc deficiencies, particularly during pregnancy and lactation.

Composition

Each capsule contains:

• Elemental iron 50 mg (as carbonyl iron INN)
• Folic acid BP 500 micrograms
• Zinc sulfate monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg zinc)

Pharmacology

This timed-release capsule combines carbonyl iron, folic acid, and zinc sulfate monohydrate. Carbonyl iron, with over 98% iron content, offers high bioavailability and low toxicity, making it a safer and more effective choice for iron supplementation.

Dosage & Administration

For adults: Take one capsule daily before food or as directed by a physician.

Interaction

Carbonyl iron may reduce the absorption of certain antibiotics and medications like levodopa and levothyroxine. Folic acid may interact with antiepileptic drugs, potentially reducing plasma concentrations of certain medications.

Contraindications

This product is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components or those with iron overload.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include gastrointestinal irritations such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea. Rarely, allergic reactions may occur. The inclusion of carbonyl iron pellets in the capsules helps reduce the risk of gastrointestinal irritation.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Administration of iron during the first trimester of pregnancy requires definite evidence of iron deficiency. Prophylaxis of iron deficiency, along with supplementary zinc and folic acid, is justified during the remainder of pregnancy when an inadequate diet calls for supplementation.

Precautions & Warnings

Special care is needed in patients with iron overload states, such as hemochromatosis. Lack of response to treatment warrants further investigations to exclude other causes of anemia. Patients with renal failure may be at risk of zinc accumulation.

Overdose Effects

Symptoms of carbonyl iron overdose may include decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, dark stool, rapid pulse, fever, coma, and seizures.
