Description

Indications

Zesup is recommended for addressing zinc deficiency and conditions leading to zinc loss. Deficiency can arise from poor diet or malabsorption, while zinc loss can occur due to trauma, burns, diarrhea, and protein-losing conditions. It’s prescribed until clinical improvement, with continued use often necessary for severe malabsorption or metabolic disorders.

Pharmacology

Zinc sulfate monohydrate, an essential trace element, plays crucial roles in various enzyme systems within the body. Essential for growth, health, sexual maturation, and reproduction, zinc also supports functions like dark vision adaptation, taste and smell sensitivity, insulin regulation, and immune defense. Deficiency may lead to impaired immune function, delayed wound healing, reduced taste and smell senses, poor night vision, increased abortion risk, alopecia, mental fatigue, skin changes, and reproductive organ development issues.

Dosage

Children under 10 kg: 5 ml (1 teaspoonful) twice daily after meals. Children between 10-30 kg: 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) once to three times daily after meals. Adults and children over 30 kg: 20 ml (4 teaspoonfuls) once to three times daily after meals.

For best results, take the medication at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. If stomach upset occurs, it can be taken with food.

Administration (for dispersible tablets)

  • Place the tablet on a teaspoon.
  • Add enough water for complete dissolution.
  • Administer the entire dissolved solution.

Interaction

Concurrent use of tetracyclines or quinolone antibiotics with zinc may reduce absorption of both drugs. Penicillamine use with zinc can also decrease zinc absorption.

Contraindications

Avoid Zesup if hypersensitive to any ingredients in the preparation.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset, heartburn, and gastritis.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Safety during pregnancy is undetermined; zinc passes through the placenta and into breast milk.

Precautions & Warnings

Adjust dosage in cases of acute renal failure to prevent zinc accumulation.

Therapeutic Class

Specific mineral preparations.

Storage Conditions

Store in a dry place away from light and heat, and keep out of children’s reach.
