Indications
Windel is recommended as a bronchodilator for the treatment of:
- Asthma
- Chronic Bronchitis
- Emphysema
- Other conditions associated with airway obstruction
Pharmacology
Windel contains Salbutamol, a synthetic sympathomimetic agent primarily targeting beta-2 adrenergic receptors. By stimulating these receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, Salbutamol induces bronchodilation, leading to improved pulmonary function, as shown by spirometric assessments.
Dosage & Administration
Salbutamol Tablets or Syrup
- Children:
- 2-6 years: 2.5 ml syrup, 3-4 times daily
- 6-12 years: 5 ml syrup, 3-4 times daily
- Over 12 years: 5-10 ml syrup, 3-4 times daily (or 2-4 mg tablet, 3-4 times daily)
- Adults: 2-4 mg tablet, 3-4 times daily. Maximum single dose: 8 mg tablet.
Salbutamol Respiratory Solution
To be used with a nebulizer under medical supervision. This solution is not for injection or ingestion.
- Method 1 (Intermittent Administration):
- Adults: 0.5 ml-1.0 ml up to four times daily, diluted with sterile normal saline (final volume of 2-4 ml). Administration typically lasts about 10 minutes.
- Children under 12: 0.5 ml diluted to 2.0-4.0 ml with normal saline; may require up to 1.0 ml.
- Method 2 (Continuous Administration): Dilute 1-2 ml to 100 ml with normal saline for nebulizer use. Consider adding oxygen if there’s a risk of hypoventilation.
Salbutamol Injection
- Adults: Prepare infusion by diluting 5 mL of Salbutamol (1000 mcg/mL) in 500 mL of an appropriate IV solution. Typical infusion rates range from 3 to 20 micrograms of Salbutamol per minute.
- Children and Adolescents (<18 years): Dosage has not been established due to insufficient data.
Salbutamol Inhalation Capsule
- Adults: For bronchospasm relief, administer one or two capsules as needed. Maintenance typically involves one 200 mcg capsule every 4-6 hours, with some requiring two capsules.
- Children (4 years and older): One capsule for acute bronchospasm or maintenance therapy, up to four times a day. Each inhalation effect lasts at least four hours.
- Exercise-Induced Asthma:
- Adults: 400 micrograms
- Children: 200 micrograms, taken 15-30 minutes before physical activity.
Consult a registered healthcare professional before use.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include tremors, palpitations, muscle cramps, tachycardia, headaches, and peripheral vasodilation, particularly with higher doses.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Windel should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus. It is unclear if Salbutamol is excreted in breast milk; thus, a careful decision should be made regarding breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
Use with caution in individuals with hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular issues, vascular disorders, hypertension, or diabetes. Monitor potassium levels due to the risk of hypokalemia, which may increase susceptibility to cardiac arrhythmias.
Overdose Effects
Symptoms of overdose may include angina, headaches, nausea, and tremors. A cardio-selective beta-blocker may be used as an antidote but should be administered cautiously in those with a history of bronchospasm.
Therapeutic Class
Short-acting selective β2-adrenoceptor stimulants
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
