Description

Vaxphoid is a sterile, clear, colorless solution intended for intramuscular administration, containing the Vi polysaccharide derived from the Salmonella typhi Ty2 strain.

Dosage & Administration

Dosage: A single dose of 0.5 ml is recommended for both adults and children aged two years or older. Individuals who remain at risk for typhoid fever should receive a booster dose of the vaccine every three years.

Administration: The Typhoid Polysaccharide Vaccine is for intramuscular injection only. It should not be injected intravenously. For adults, it should be administered in the deltoid muscle, while for children, it may be given in either the deltoid or the vastus lateralis. Avoid injecting into the gluteal area to prevent nerve damage. Caution should be exercised when administering the vaccine to individuals with thrombocytopenia or bleeding disorders, as these patients may experience bleeding following intramuscular injections. After administration, apply firm pressure to the injection site (without rubbing) for at least two minutes.

Co-administration: The typhoid vaccine can be co-administered with other vaccines; however, it should not be mixed with other vaccines or medicinal products in the same syringe.
Consult a registered healthcare professional before using this medication.

Contraindications

This vaccine offers protection against typhoid fever caused by Salmonella typhi but does not protect against paratyphoid fever or illnesses caused by non-invasive Salmonella. Typhoid vaccine should not be administered to individuals with a known hypersensitivity to any vaccine components or those who have experienced hypersensitivity reactions after previous administration of the typhoid vaccine or any other vaccine containing Vi polysaccharide from Salmonella typhi antigens. It is expected that patients undergoing immunosuppressive treatments or those with immunodeficiencies may not achieve an adequate immune response. The administration of the typhoid vaccine should be deferred in individuals suffering from acute severe febrile illnesses.

Side Effects

Most recipients of the Vaxphoid vaccine may experience mild reactions post-vaccination, which are typically short-lived. Common reactions include localized effects at the injection site, such as erythema, swelling, and tenderness. Systemic reactions, including malaise, headaches, diarrhea, vomiting, myalgia, and slight fever, are less frequently reported. In very rare instances, allergic reactions (such as itching, rashes, and hives) may occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation

The impact of the typhoid vaccine on fetal development or reproductive capability has not been thoroughly assessed. It should only be administered during pregnancy when there is a significant risk of infection. It is unclear whether the vaccine is excreted in human milk, so it may only be given to nursing mothers when absolutely necessary.

Therapeutic Class

Vaccines, Anti-sera & Immunoglobulin

Storage Conditions

Keep out of the reach of children. Store between +2°C and +8°C. Ensure transportation is also at +2°C to +8°C. Do not freeze; discard the vaccine if frozen. Protect from light.
