Indications
Valovir is prescribed for the treatment of various viral infections, including:
- Herpes Zoster (Shingles): Effective for both immunocompetent adults and those with mild or moderate immunosuppression.
- Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Infections:
- Treatment and suppression of genital herpes in immunocompetent and immunocompromised adults and adolescents.
- Management of ocular HSV infections and recurrent outbreaks.
- Prevention and management of cold sores (herpes labialis).
- Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Prophylaxis: Used for the prevention of CMV infection and disease following solid organ transplantation in adults and adolescents.
Always use as directed by a registered medical professional.
Pharmacology
Valovir contains Valacyclovir, an antiviral agent that effectively inhibits the replication of herpes viruses, including herpes zoster, HSV, and CMV. Valacyclovir is a prodrug of Acyclovir, which slows down the growth and spread of the virus, reducing the symptoms and duration of the infection.
By inhibiting viral DNA replication, Valovir helps manage both the symptoms and the spread of infections, providing relief and reducing recovery time.
Dosage & Administration
For Herpes Zoster (Shingles):
- Immunocompetent Adults: 1000 mg (1 tablet) three times daily for 7 days.
- Immunocompromised Adults: 1000 mg three times daily for at least 7 days, with additional treatment for 2 days after lesions crust.
For HSV Infections:
- Genital Herpes: 500 mg twice daily for 3-5 days (for recurrent episodes), or up to 10 days (for initial episodes).
- Cold Sores: 2000 mg (2 tablets) twice in one day, with a 12-hour gap between doses.
- Ocular HSV: Tailored dosing based on severity, typically 1000 mg twice daily for 5 days.
For CMV Prophylaxis (post-transplant):
- 2000 mg four times a day, usually for 90 days or longer depending on risk.
Consult your physician for the appropriate dosage based on your condition and medical history.
