Indications
Valoate CR Vaiproate is indicated for the treatment of various medical conditions:
- All types of epilepsy: Partial seizures, absence seizures (petit mal), generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal), myoclonic seizures, atonic seizures, and mixed seizures including absence attacks.
- Prophylaxis of febrile convulsions and post-traumatic epilepsy.
- Treatment of bipolar disorder and prophylaxis of migraine.
Composition
Formulations include:
- Sodium Valproate tablets: Each enteric-coated tablet contains 200 mg Sodium Valproate BP.
- Sodium Valproate syrup: Each 5 ml syrup contains 200 mg Sodium Valproate BP.
- Sodium Valproate controlled release tablets: Available in 200 mg, 300 mg, and 500 mg strengths, designed for sustained release.
- Sodium Valproate injection: Each 5 ml injectable solution contains Sodium Valproate BP equivalent to 500 mg Valproic Acid.
Pharmacology
Sodium Valproate potentially increases brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), though its precise mechanism remains unclear.
Dosage & Administration
Administration:
- Oral tablets and syrup are administered in divided doses based on patient requirements.
- Injection formulations are administered cautiously according to body weight and medical condition.
Interaction
Valoate CR Vaiproate may interact with drugs like Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Warfarin, and Aspirin, impacting their metabolism.
Contraindications
Avoid Sodium Valproate in cases of known hypersensitivity to the drug or liver dysfunction. Use is restricted during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential.
Side Effects
Common side effects include anorexia, nausea, and vomiting. CNS effects such as sedation and tremor may occur infrequently but can be managed with dose adjustments.

Use with caution during pregnancy due to potential fetal risks and consider alternatives while breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
