Indications
Utal is prescribed prior to surgery to manage moderate to severe symptoms of uterine fibroids, benign tumors of the uterus. It is intended for adult women who have not yet undergone menopause.
Pharmacology
Ulipristal acetate, a selective progesterone receptor modulator, functions by blocking progesterone receptors. Progesterone can stimulate fibroid growth, leading to symptoms like heavy bleeding, anemia, and abdominal pain. By inhibiting progesterone activity, Utal halts fibroid cell proliferation, reducing both their size and associated symptoms.
Dosage & Administration
Administered orally, the recommended Utal dose is one tablet (5 mg) daily for up to three months. This treatment cycle can be repeated once, starting within the first week of menstruation.
Contraindications
Utal is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to its components, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and in cases of unexplained genital bleeding or certain cancers (uterine, cervical, ovarian, breast).
Side Effects
Common side effects may include endometrial thickening, hot flashes, headaches, and uterine hemorrhage.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Ulipristal acetate is classified as Pregnancy Category X and should not be used during pregnancy. It is excreted in human milk, so breastfeeding while taking Utal is not recommended.
Precautions & Warnings
Prescribe Utal after careful diagnosis, ensuring pregnancy is ruled out. Avoid concurrent use with progestogen-only pills or hormonal contraceptives. Monitor for endometrial changes and inform patients of potential alterations in bleeding patterns.
Special Populations
Exercise caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment and closely monitor those with moderate to severe renal impairment when using Utal.
Storage Conditions
Store Utal below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
