Indications
Uriset is prescribed for the following conditions:
- Relieving discomfort in urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Preventing kidney stones
- Assisting with uricosuric therapy to prevent gout
- Managing acidosis caused by kidney diseases
Pharmacology
Uriset is an oral solution combining Potassium Citrate and Citric Acid, designed for systemic alkalization. Potassium Citrate metabolizes into Potassium Bicarbonate, effectively alkalinizing urine without inducing systemic alkalosis at recommended doses. It is known for its palatability, pleasant taste, and long-term tolerability, without disrupting gastric acidity or digestion.
Dosage & Administration
- For UTI discomfort relief:
- Adults and children over 6 years: 10 ml three times daily, diluted in a glass of water.
- Children 1-6 years: 5 ml three times daily, diluted in half a glass of water.
- For kidney stone prevention, uricosuric therapy for gout prevention, and kidney disease-related acidosis:
- Adults: 10-15 ml four times daily (or as directed by a physician), diluted in a glass of water.
- Pediatric: 5-10 ml four times daily (or as directed by a physician), diluted in half a glass of water.
- Use as directed by a healthcare professional.
Interaction
Concurrent use with potassium-containing medications, potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or cardiac glycosides may increase the risk of toxicity.
Contraindications
Uriset is contraindicated in severe renal impairment with low urine output or azotemia, untreated Addison’s disease, acute dehydration, severe myocardial damage, and hyperkalemia from any cause.
Side Effects
Typically well-tolerated when used as prescribed in patients with normal renal function and urinary output. However, caution is advised in patients with abnormal renal function to prevent hyperkalemia or alkalosis. Symptoms of potassium intoxication include weakness, confusion, and tingling extremities.
Pregnancy & Lactation
No data is available regarding use during pregnancy and lactation. Consult with a healthcare provider before use.
Precautions & Warnings
Exercise caution in patients with low urine output. Dilute Uriset adequately with water to minimize gastrointestinal irritation. Administer doses preferably after meals. Large doses may pose risks of hyperkalemia and alkalosis, particularly in renal impairment.
Overdose Effects
Oral potassium salts rarely cause serious hyperkalemia in those with normal potassium excretion. If hyperkalemia occurs, prompt treatment is essential to prevent serious complications.
Therapeutic Class
Uriset belongs to the therapeutic class of agents used for preventing recurrent kidney stone formation and urinary alkalinization.
Storage Conditions
Store Uriset below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of children’s reach.
