Indications
Ural-K is used for:
- Easing discomfort associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Preventing the formation of kidney stones
- Complementing uricosuric agents in the prevention of gout
- Managing acidosis resulting from kidney disorders
Pharmacology
Ural-K combines Potassium Citrate and Citric Acid in a palatable oral solution that effectively acts as a systemic alkalizer. Potassium Citrate is converted into Potassium Bicarbonate upon absorption, helping to alkalinize urine without causing systemic alkalosis at recommended doses. This solution is designed to be pleasant tasting and well-tolerated, even for extended use. Unlike other agents, Potassium Citrate does not interfere with gastric juice or digestion.
Dosage & Administration
For relieving UTI discomfort:
- Adults and children over 6 years: 10 ml three times daily, diluted in one glass of water.
- Children 1-6 years: 5 ml three times daily, diluted in half a glass of water.
For preventing kidney stones, gout, and acidosis:
- Adults: 10-15 ml four times daily (or as directed by a physician), diluted in one glass of water.
- Children: 5-10 ml four times daily (or as directed by a physician), diluted in half a glass of water.
Always follow your physician’s instructions.
Interaction
Use caution when combining Ural-K with other potassium-containing medications, potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or cardiac glycosides, as these may increase the risk of toxicity.
Contraindications
Ural-K is not suitable for individuals with:
- Severe renal impairment with oliguria or azotemia
- Untreated Addison’s disease
- Acute dehydration
- Severe myocardial damage
- Hyperkalemia from any cause
Side Effects
Ural-K is generally well-tolerated when used as directed in patients with normal renal function. However, in patients with abnormal renal function, there is a risk of hyperkalemia or alkalosis. Symptoms of potassium intoxication include weakness, mental confusion, and tingling in extremities.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Current information on the use of Ural-K during pregnancy and lactation is not available.
Precautions & Warnings
Use Ural-K with caution in patients with low urinary output. It should be adequately diluted to avoid gastrointestinal irritation and preferably taken after meals. Large doses can lead to hyperkalemia and alkalosis, particularly in individuals with renal disease.
Overdose Effects
Oral potassium salts generally do not cause serious hyperkalemia in those with normal excretory function. However, if excretory mechanisms are compromised, hyperkalemia may occur and require immediate treatment. Management includes:
- Discontinuation of potassium-containing foods or medications.
- Intravenous administration of dextrose solution with insulin.
- Use of exchange resins, hemodialysis, or peritoneal dialysis if necessary.
Therapeutic Class
- Prevention of recurrent kidney stone formation
- Urinary alkalinizing agent
Storage Conditions
Store Ural-K below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
