Indications

Piperacillin and tazobactam, a combination product comprising a penicillin-class antibacterial and a β-lactamase inhibitor, is prescribed for treating moderate to severe infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These include:

• Intra-abdominal Infections: Such as complicated appendicitis or peritonitis caused by certain bacteria.
• Skin and Skin Structure Infections: Including cellulitis and abscesses caused by specific bacteria.
• Female Pelvic Infections: Such as postpartum endometritis or pelvic inflammatory disease.
• Community-acquired pneumonia: Of moderate severity caused by specific bacteria.
• Nosocomial pneumonia: Of moderate to severe intensity caused by specific bacteria.

Pharmacology

Piperacillin, a semi-synthetic penicillin, effectively inhibits septum and cell wall synthesis in both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Tazobactam, a potent inhibitor of beta-lactamases, extends the antibiotic spectrum of piperacillin to include beta-lactamase-producing bacteria.

Dosage & Administration

Administer piperacillin and tazobactam intravenously over 30 minutes. Dosage varies based on the type and severity of infection, with adjustments for age and renal function.

Interaction

Piperacillin and tazobactam may interact with certain drugs, such as aminoglycosides, probenecid, anticoagulants, vecuronium, and methotrexate. Monitoring is crucial when co-administering these medications.

Contraindications

Avoid piperacillin and tazobactam in patients with a history of allergic reactions to penicillins, cephalosporins, or β-lactamase inhibitors.

Side Effects
