Indications
Suzyme is utilized for treating patients with chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis (mucoviscidosis), following partial or complete pancreatectomy, total gastrectomy, steatorrhea, somatostatinoma, celiac disease, and other conditions associated with pancreatic insufficiency.
Composition
Each enteric-coated tablet of Suzyme contains 325 mg of Pancreatin BP, providing enzymatic activity as follows: Amylase (7800 units), Protease (455 units), and Lipase (6500 units).
Pharmacology
Pancreatin is an extract from the mammalian pancreas, containing Amylase, Protease, and Lipase enzymes. It is designed to dissolve in the alkaline environment of the duodenum, releasing its active enzymes. Amylase breaks down dietary starch into maltose, maltotriose, and alpha-dextrin. Protease cleaves peptide bonds within proteins and polypeptides, producing amino acids and oligopeptides. Lipase hydrolyzes dietary triglycerides, forming two molecules of fatty acid and one molecule of beta-monoglyceride. The preparation can convert at least 25 times its weight of starch into soluble carbohydrates and the same amount of casein into proteoses within 5 minutes, equivalent to 150 times in 30 minutes.
Dosage & Administration
Swallow 2-3 tablets whole with a small amount of water immediately after or during meals, or as directed by a physician. Always follow the advice of your healthcare provider.
Interaction
Alkaline media can damage the enteric coating, so Suzyme should not be used simultaneously with antacids to prevent premature release in the stomach.
Contraindications
Pancreatin is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to the drug.
Side Effects
Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort. Buccal and perianal soreness may occur, especially in infants. Hypersensitivity reactions, such as sneezing, tearing, or skin rashes, have also been reported.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pancreatin should be administered to pregnant women only if necessary. It is unknown whether Pancreatin is excreted in human milk, so caution should be exercised when it is given to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Patients with known allergies to animal proteins should use Suzyme cautiously.
Overdose Effects
Excessive doses may have a laxative effect. Systemic toxicity is not expected, but very high doses may lead to hyperuricaemia and hyperuricosuria.
Therapeutic Class
Digestive Enzyme
Storage Conditions
Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place away from light.
