Description

Indications:

Sultolin serves as a bronchodilator for conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other airway obstructions.

Pharmacology:

Salbutamol, the active ingredient, acts as a synthetic sympathomimetic agent, predominantly stimulating beta-2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscles, resulting in bronchodilation.

Dosage & Administration:

  • Salbutamol Tablet or Syrup:
    • Children:
      • 2-6 years: 2.5 ml syrup, 3-4 times daily
      • 6-12 years: 5 ml syrup, 3-4 times daily
      • Over 12 years: 5-10 ml syrup, 3-4 times daily (2-4 mg tablet, 3-4 times daily)
    • Adults: 2-4 mg tablet, 3-4 times daily. Maximum single dose is 8 mg tablet.
  • Salbutamol Respirator Solution:
    • Method-1 (Intermittent Administration):
      • Adults (and the elderly): 0.5 ml-1.0 ml up to four times a day.
      • Children under 12 years: 0.5 ml diluted to 2.0-4.0 ml with normal saline.
    • Method-2 (Continuous administration): 1-2 ml solution diluted to 100 ml with normal saline solution.
  • Salbutamol Nebulizer Solution:
    • Adults & Elderly: 2.5 mg to 5 mg up to 4 times a day.
    • Children under 12 years: 2.5 mg up to 4 times a day.
  • Salbutamol Injection: Diluted as per medical guidelines.
  • Salbutamol Inhalation Capsule:
    • Adults: One or two capsules every 4 to 6 hours.
    • Children: One capsule for relief of acute bronchospasm.
  • Exercise-induced Asthma: Adults: 400 microgram; Child: 200 microgram, 15-30 minutes prior to exertion.

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include muscle tremors, palpitations, and headaches, particularly with high doses.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

Caution is advised during pregnancy, weighing potential benefits against risks. Its excretion in human milk is unknown, necessitating careful consideration during lactation.

Precautions & Warnings:

Use with caution in patients with certain conditions like hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension. Careful monitoring is recommended for patients with diabetes mellitus or closed-angle glaucoma.

Overdose Effects:

Overdose symptoms may include angina, nausea, vomiting, and tremors. Beta-blocking agents are the preferred antidote, though caution is advised.
