Description

Indications

Sultolin serves as a bronchodilator indicated for the treatment of:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic Bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Other conditions associated with airway obstruction.

Pharmacology

Salbutamol, a synthetic sympathomimetic agent, primarily activates beta-2 adrenergic receptors. It induces bronchodilation by relaxing bronchial smooth muscles, leading to improved pulmonary function as measured by spirometry.

Dosage & Administration

For Salbutamol tablets or syrup:

  • Children (2-6 years): 2.5 ml syrup, 3-4 times daily
  • Children (6-12 years): 5 ml syrup, 3-4 times daily
  • Adults and children over 12 years: 2-4 mg tablet or 5-10 ml syrup, 3-4 times daily (maximum single dose of 8 mg tablet)

Salbutamol Respirator Solution should be used with a suitable nebulizer under physician guidance. It should not be injected or ingested.

Method-1 (Intermittent Administration)

  • Adults: 0.5-1.0 ml up to four times daily, with doses up to 40 mg/day in hospital settings.
  • Children under 12 years: 0.5-1.0 ml, diluted to 2.0-4.0 ml with normal saline, repeated up to four times daily.

Method-2 (Continuous Administration)

  • Adults: 1-2 ml solution diluted to 100 ml with normal saline, administered via a suitable nebulizer device. Oxygen supplementation may be necessary to prevent hypoxia.

Salbutamol Nebulizer Solution

  • Adults: 2.5 mg to 5 mg up to 4 times daily, with doses up to 40 mg/day under medical supervision.
  • Children under 12 years: 2.5 mg up to 4 times daily, with higher doses if needed.

Salbutamol Injection

  • Adults: Prepared for continuous intravenous infusion under medical direction, with recommended diluents and infusion rates.

Salbutamol Inhalation Capsule

  • Adults: One or two capsules every 4 to 6 hours as needed for bronchospasm relief.
  • Children: One capsule every 4 to 6 hours as needed, with adjustments for maintenance therapy.

Exercise-induced Asthma

  • Adults: 400 micrograms, and for children: 200 micrograms, administered 15-30 minutes before physical exertion, based on physician advice.

Side Effects

Potential side effects of Sultolin may include skeletal muscle tremors, palpitations, muscle cramps, tachycardia, headaches, and peripheral vasodilation.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Use during pregnancy should be considered only if benefits outweigh risks. It is unknown whether Salbutamol is excreted in human milk, thus nursing mothers should consult their healthcare provider.

Precautions & Warnings

Use Sultolin cautiously in patients with conditions such as hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. High doses may lead to hypokalemia, increasing susceptibility to digitalis-induced arrhythmias.

Overdose Effects

Symptoms of overdose may include angina, headache, nausea, vomiting, and tremors. Beta-blocking agents are recommended as antidotes, but caution is advised in patients with a history of bronchospasm.

Therapeutic Class

Sultolin belongs to the class of short-acting selective beta-2-adrenoceptor stimulants.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
