Composition
Each 5 ml of syrup contains:
- Guaifenesin BP: 100 mg
- Levomenthol BP: 1.1 mg
- Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride BP: 14 mg
Pharmacology
Guaifenesin works as an expectorant, helping to reduce the thickness of stubborn mucus. Levomenthol offers mild anesthetic and decongestant effects. Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride provides antitussive (cough-suppressing), antihistaminic, and anticholinergic benefits.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and children over 12: Take 2 teaspoons (10 ml) up to 4 times daily, or as prescribed by a healthcare professional. Do not exceed 8 teaspoons (40 ml) within 24 hours.
- Children & Adolescents: The safety and efficacy of Guaifenesin for children and adolescents have not been fully established.
- Use medication only as prescribed by a registered physician.
Interactions
Containing Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, this syrup may enhance the sedative effects of alcohol and other central nervous system depressants. Due to its anticholinergic properties, Diphenhydramine may amplify the effects of other anticholinergics (e.g., certain psychotropic medications or atropine), potentially leading to side effects like increased heart rate, dry mouth, gastrointestinal discomfort, urinary retention, and headache.
Contraindications
Do not use this syrup if you have a known allergy to any ingredient. It is also contraindicated in patients who have taken MAOIs in the last two weeks.
Side Effects
Potential side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, gastrointestinal upset, dry mouth, nose, and throat, urinary difficulty, or blurred vision.
Pregnancy & Lactation
As with any medication, use during pregnancy requires caution. There are no known adverse effects on the fetus or nursing infant linked to this product.
Precautions & Warnings
This syrup may cause drowsiness, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if affected. Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride is not recommended for individuals with narrow-angle glaucoma or symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy. Do not use this product for persistent or chronic coughs associated with asthma or if the cough is accompanied by excessive mucus, unless directed by a physician.
Overdose Effects
Excessive Guaifenesin intake may lead to kidney stones. If an overdose occurs, treatment should be supportive and symptom-based.
Therapeutic Class
Classified under combined cough expectorants.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C, in a dry place protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
